Hi,

I have a Gigabyte Gaming 7 I97 motherboard, a I7 4770K processor and a H100i cooler. I can't seem to overclock past 4.3 ghz. Even at that speed my CPU will run over 100C when I run Intel Burn Test. If I try to change Host BLCK settings so I can lower my Core speeds my motherboard can't get past the BIOS. I tried to use my VCore up to 1.4V. Do you know what I could be doing wrong? Thank you.

Is it a 101 or 124 blue screen error?

Some haswell's are just awful at overclocking and you might have gotten a dud.

Regardless, 1.4v is too much for an h100i using avx.

Try a different HSF first. My Corsair CLC didn't put enough pressure on my Haswell for good TIM contact with core. I shaved 15oC by switching to a Noctua DH14

You probably lost the silicone lottery.

If you lost the silicone lottery, you should try a different TIM (i.e. not silicone), and maybe de-lid. ;)

If you lost the silicon lottery, you're stuck. :(

So I ended up replacing the thermal paste on the CPU. On the Intel burn test it will go between 85 and 105 at 4.5 ghz. Is this OK or do you still think I have a problem? The voltage was around 1.3V. Thanks.

Do you think it could be the CPU or the heat sink (H100i)? I'm not sure which to take back to store.

Your cpu is working just fine. I have heard of corsair clc's not having adequate pressure/contact like TerryMathews stated. You could always run the cpu at stock with the H100i and the stock cooler and find the difference in temp and see if it close to what reviews show (the difference in temp between the two and not the actual temp as that will be dependent on several other variables)

Just so we're clear I was referring to the TIM between the heat spreader and core.

Using the same water cooler and the same size Haswell CPU, MY cpu TEMP
sits on 38c on idol and 49c underload, CPU is running at 4.60 GHz, i have pushed it to 4.8GHz
CPU VCore is set at 1.359v
It is running very stable

Are you setting the voltage manually? Or leaving it on Auto?

My 4770K will not go over 4.2 Ghz with less than 1.3V. I decided to not go over 1.3V because I run DC programs full load 24/7/365. I have the Noctua NH-U14S. Your chip is good compared to mine. Some chips are better than others - thus what they call the Lottery.

Manually set the Core voltage to 1.3 or whatever you are comfortable with and set the highest Ghz you can get at that voltage and be happy you don't have my chip :)

And errr ... umm ... ahh ... You can't return the chip because it won't overclock to 4.6 or 4.2!
