i7 4510U vs i5 4210U

They are very similar in specs. Based on clock, i7 is only a little faster 2.0GHz (3.1GHz Turbo) vs i5 1.7GHz (2.7GHz Turbo).

I'm trying to find out more about i5-4200M 2.5GHz (3.1GHz Turbo), but the TDP 37W scares me. My old laptop Intel Core i7 720QM is only 35W and it is very hot...too hot for my liking. Idle hovers around 59-60C and full to 85-88C. I'm trying to find out the idle/full temperature of i5-4200M (any laptop brands), but I couldn't find any info.

Most of the temps depend on the laptop's hardware and cooling design, not which chip you pick - an i7 can run cooler than an Atom if the i7 is in a well designed enclosure and the Atom isn't.

The i7-4750HQ in my Macbook (47w, 2.0 Ghz, 3.2 GHz Turbo) runs at around 33C when I'm just idling, surfing the web, etc. When I'm gaming, I've seen CPU temps >90C.

Maybe it's a little slower, but I think that's enough for most of my stuffs like browsing, emailing, movies.

CPUs will turbo up to their thermal limit (100-105C depending on the generation.) So that's actually by design.

I disabled Turbo Boost a while ago, and it stays in the 70s while gaming now.

This aversion to temps over 60C is an artifact of C2D / Athlon overclocking limits, and isn't really representative of the "new normal." (The Q6600, for example, would start throttling at 71C.)

all the dual core haswells are pretty much the same core. the i7 4500u are just the i5 with higher clocks.

on an ultrabook or something i never think the i7 is worth it, since for the cost of upgrading you get barely anything. at least from i3 to i5 you get turbo , but i7 isn't a huge benefit (has what 1mb more cache too)

i7 definitely isn't worth the extra costs, stay with the more affordable i5.
