I currently have an i5-750 in an MSI P55-GD80. I was just given an EVGA X79 SLI for free. If I sell my i5/mobo combo I can upgrade to an i7-3820 for a minimal additional investment. Y'all think it would be worth it for the upgrade, especially with a bit of OC, or should I sell the EVGA board as well and wait for the Haswell release or longer?

IB-E will be out in a little while, and if you can afford the higher-cored CPUs, it will blow away the Haswell chips. Perhaps not for gaming, because few games can really use more than four cores, but other things, like video encoding, will benefit.

Def. can't afford a 6-core SB-E. I can basically upgrade to the 3820 for ~$50. Just trying to decide if its worth that upgrade, or if I should just sell the x79 board and stick with my i5 for a while longer.

Do it. I haven't noticed much of a difference between Ivy and Sandy (10% difference roughly between Haswell>Ivy>Sandy based on the Tom's Hardware 4770k article), but the difference between Sandy and Clarkdale was significant.

Get the 3820 and learn to overclock to 4.6-4.75ghz.

It's a $50 upgrade cost for the 3820 system (Sandy architecture) vs. a probable $150+ mobo and $250+ cpu for Haswell.

Since you got a free X79 motherboard and it'll only cost you $50 to do the upgrade, i'd say hell yes.

You get a much faster i7 cpu that is very overclockable, more cache memory, Quad-channel ram, and multiple x16 PCI-e slots.

Just make sure to get a good aftermarket cooler to cool that 130Watt beast!

It depends on your needs and whether or not selling the x79 board would offend whoever gave it to you for free. I vote sell and wait for Haswell, it'll be faster and use less power than the i7-3820.

go for it, if it will only cost an extra 50 to go with a 3820 why not?
