Hello all.. I need some help with a few decisions in buying a new computer. I have a unique collection of needs... which is making things difficult.

So here's the story. I need the computer for two very different things: music production (I use Sonar for my DAW) and gaming. The way I see it, this points to a good processor for the music work and a good graphics card for the gaming. My budget's in the 1200-1500 range. So that pretty much rules out the 6-core intel X79 offerings. And I honestly don't know if there's any real difference between the 3770k and 3820.

The only overclocking that I would consider is a simple, mild OC through OC genie (on MSI) or something similar.. but I keep my computers for a long time. So I don't want to do anything to shorten the CPU's life.

I also don't have a good perspective on what speed of memory to get. If I go 1600 MHz DDR3, will that be a bottleneck? 1800 and 2133 is not much more... but if that's not where the bottleneck is, then there's no real reason to do it. Can anyone shed some light on this?

The GPU is an easier choice... I'm looking at the 660Ti right now. I don't know what's on the horizon in 2013, though. From what I understand, the new GPUs will probably be like the 690 - expensive.. only later followed by the pared down versions for people with normal budgets.

Anyway, I've been looking at this stuff for a while and I'm ready to buy... but I just don't know enough about the details to choose between the 3770k and 3820. Can anyone help me out?

thanks!

3770K. It's faster and uses less power. If you're not buying a six-core the X79 platform is rendered useless for 99.9% of scenarios.

you're better off with a 7950 than a 660ti and unless thermals were a concern
a 3770k is probably better not to mention cheaper

thanks for the reply... why the 7950? They're basically the same price... is there a real difference in performance?

there are tons of reviews. a 660ti and 7950 are basically even at stock but the 7950 has way more overclocking room and will scale better too. the 192 bit bus will really hurt the 660ti in demanding games with aa. I went with the 660ti because it was 230 bucks after rebate and I prefer using nvidia.

This seems like a familiar question. Greetings, tweakboy. Oh, 3770K is the better choice. Better IPC.

Tweakboy! Rumbled on the very first thread lol.

Didnt you buy all this stuff already anyway? i7 3770k > 3820, as axel said x79 is pointless without a hexcore.

Oh also gg, gl, hf,,,,,,,,,

It's not Tweakboy, so let's not go down this road

I will be biased. If you grab the 3820 in the future you can use Ivy Bridge E on the 2011 platform.

If you grab Ivy now your stuck to 8 threads until you upgrade mobo . but with a 3820 mobo your guaranteed a bios flash and you can use the 6 core 12 thread Ivy Bridge E due in Q3 2013. This will be Intels fastest processor not Haswell.

Also you can run quad channel if you fill up all the dimms , 8 of them ,,, and PCI 3.0 for the future, you do get usb 2 an 3 ports and sata3 ports, and SSD caching. The mobo is going to be more then a Ivy bridge one ,, but this is intels top chips.... BTW if you just overclock this thing it will keep up with 3960x ... only 2k behind 3960x extreme on the CPU QUEEN test of aida64..........thx gl

It is not pointless IM waiting for Ivy bridge E in Q3 2013

and IM telling the guy if you get a 3820 now then just a CPU swap and you run Ivy E when it comes out. Intel confirmed,, it will work on x79 boards.

I will get Ivy Bridge E ,,,,,, 6 core 12 thread. However I dont see making sense to buy a 3930x 6 core then buy another 6 core in Ivy E ,,,,, so I decided to save the money off the processor , and use that 300 dollars I saved in the future when Ive E is out and I feel like using the CPU. Also I have 64GB of RAM ,,,,, which other motherboards dont support.

no, sorry guys, I'm totally new here... I'm stuck with a Pentium IV right now... haven't bought yet.

Can anyone help with the memory speed question?

thanks!

So is 1800 enough? Or would 2166 MHz memory actually help?

It's sounding like 3770k is the right choice.

get 2133 as long as its not much more money than 1867. also make sure its not higher than 1.5 for voltage.

Ok, that's good to know.. I think it's like $30 more since it's for 16GB.. .so that's good.

So aside from advantages for overclocking, is there anything special that I need to know about choosing the right Z77 motherboard for the 3770k? This is probably the thing that I know the least about.

thanks again y'all... very much appreciated!

I like Asus and Gigabyte personally. A lot of people like Asrock as well, but I have seen two posters in the past week with, what sound to be, bad boards.

thanks - yeah, Gigabyte is in the running. I've heard good things about MSI as well. I don't know how much difference it really makes, though in the end...

i7 3820 is brainless on X79 ... cause I7 3770K + 1155 is cheaper and a bit faster .... you have to pay extra $$$ for X79 mobo for nothing ..... for even less performance ..... why ?

Sure if you get 6 Core I7 3930K it's another story ... and 1866 MHZ fill be great for you ... don't need more i think

I had the same question - 3820 or 3770K recently and went back and forth a hundred times... Talked myself in and out of each platform and ASUS motherboard. Stared at the comparisons and reviews 'til my eyes bugged out.

Microcenter had the 3770K for $220 so I jumped on it and got an ASUS Maximus V Forumla board.

After a nice GPU upgrade, I believe my system will be relevant for a few years.

No regrets.
