There has been one anecdotal claim that removing it didn't help (which has been reposted so often it looks like data at a cursory glance), but the same claim also didn't detail any heat sink mounting modifications (which would be needed to support the thinner resulting CPU package), so we have no clue if proper contact and pressure was used.

-you could be correct but I don't remember any 5.0 ghz sb 7\24 @ the sb + 5days ,some still do not run more than 4.6 today, so I'm not sure if or when ib has better batches[ that with the + 5% ipc with ib] ,sb will ever = ib.
-there's a good chance most of the "golden chips[if any?] are in the hands of noobs still @ stock under stock cooling.
-come this weekend there should be more postings ,so more samples ,more next week.

I like IVB, I do, I just bought one... But it is true that plenty of SB do 5.0 Ghz+. Mine does 4.8 @ 1.3 and 5.0 @ 1.4 and prime at 5.1 @ 1.44v and 3dmark @ 5.2 with 1.44v as well i still haven't gone past 1.44v ever.

If I were to feed 1.5v like everyone else benching I am sure that I could do 5.3+ Ghz.

It is true that plenty crap out before 4.6 Ghz though. So far, it seems SB has been a bit more widespread.

Plenty of SB do 5.0 bench stable not 24 7 stable. Also, that requires high volts, even custom water can't handle those volts with Ivy. Go nitrogen in that case.
