i7 2600K vs i5 3570K Ivy bridge for gaming rig

Both are 219.99 on Newegg. What's the difference?

I want the best CPU for gaming. I don't plan on using video editing software/cpu intense applications (except for occasional fraps).

This is my first build, so I probably wont OC initially, but I might want to in the future (especially considering how the asrock z77 makes it quite easy, supposedly). I really dont know which to chose.

2600K is i7 not i5.I would advice to get this one instead of 3570K. It has HT which the 3570K lacks.

The OP wants the chip for gaming. HT on a quad-core won't yield much for gaming, HT on a dual-core or single-core would yield benefits for gaming though.

I'd recommend the 3570k if these are the OP's only two choices.

Since this is for gaming, the choice of 2600k or 3570k could be a pointless decision of the GPU is anemic. If the GPU is anemic then the OP would be better off targeting a cheaper CPU and using the remaining funds on purchasing a better GPU.

2600K. Literally the same exact performance after overclocking, and you're getting HT "for free" which could help somewhere down the line.

Sorry but beg to disagree.There are quite a few games today which utilizes more than 4 cores so 2600K would be beneficial for those situations.Also gaming chip doesn't necessarily mean it won't be used for anything else.

Gaming wise the 3570K would be better. Assuming same overclock etc. The 3570K lacks HT, but for pure gaming you dont need it. And the 3570K is about 5% faster clock for clock, got PCIe 3.0 and uses ~20% less power that again translates into less heat in your room/chassis.

You won't get a consensus here. Its a hard call for me personally. More threads or a bit more ipc? I would personally go with 2600k because my favorite game benefits from more than 4 threads.
