After doing some research I saw that the 2600k i7 sandy the most powerful one is only about 400 dollars, while the 980 Extreme is 1000 dollars. I dont get that ?

You pay 600 less and get a more powerful CPU ....

the K stands for unlocked multiplier.

YOu can get it to 4.4Ghz easy with proper cooling.

But still we have 4 cores or maybe 6 cores.

What about the day when we will have 16 cores i9 processor. That is when I will consider a upgrade. Thanks

How many posts are you going to make about you waiting for some mythical 16 core i9 cpu?

One is old technology and one is new. The 2600k isn't even the highest end Sandy Bridge part anyway so its not a fair comparison.

Why the hell do you need 16 cores? Heck most stuff isn't even threaded for four cores yet, but you want 16? You should consider an upgrade now TBH. The Q6600 is old and slow compared to even something like an i5 setup.

I see no reason to upgrade. Games fly and my DAW runs great

games take up 30 to 70 percent CPU power, soo I dont need a upgrade

DAW rendering takes 70 percent and while working on a project its using 30 percent CPU power. Soo no need to upgrade to another 4 core CPU... I dont care if it can render video 2 minutes faster as long as my games are 60fps and never drop high settings and my DAW works and I can compose and produce music I dont need a upgrade,, this thing can go until 2020 if I wanted. :)

yes we KNOW because you say this all the time. if your Q6600 works for you then great but please get through your head that others have much faster gpu setups than yours which can utilize that extra cpu power. not to mention the newer cpus will rape you Q6600 in many tasks that you probably dont even do.

f*** guys who gives a s***. I'm runnin a 939 x2 4200 and I'm playing all the games I want. I've never seen a time that cpu power has just been "enough" for so long.

Its f****** amazing. I'm at work on my 2006 macpro and my cpu is sitting at 6%. F*** yes!!

JSt0rm, you should know better than this. 6 and one half "thousand" posts means you should know to watch your language in technical forums.

Yeah, like I would downgrade to a 2600K. lol
yeah like its much of a downgrade at all and in some cases its not. if anything someone with a $200-$300 cpu that nearly matches your $1000 cpu and even beats it in some cases is the one that should be doing the laughing.

Hah! Somebody sounds jealous. You're Q6600 is getting more outdated by the month! I wonder how much longer you can live in denial before upgrading... maybe when your loop leaks again and takes out your CPU/mobo. :)

Pfft the real upgrade for gulftown and current i7 owners will be coming later this year, this 1155 stuff is just a small taste of whats to come.

Most people with quads should wait for 8 core SB's or haswell, unless its the original phenom quad or something.

As far as gaming is concerned, I still dont see a reason to upgrade my cpu.
Mabe when the 8 core models come out I will.

whats the point? Every game made is made to run on a xbox. What does that take?

We need some kind of quantum shift in gaming before it even makes sense. I mean crysis is still the most stressful game made and thats what 3 years on now? pathetic.

Same here. I do want the i7 2600k though, and will likely get it soon.

Unless something really drastic happens, I am not sure if Gulftown owners will want to upgrade at the end of the year. Sure bench markers will be all over it, but for the everyday users, or gamer, Intel is going to have to pull out something really special to get any funds from me in 2011 or early 2012.

Don't worry, I'll be upgrading to SB... in Q3 2011. Delicious quad channel memory, 40 scrumptious PCI-E lanes, and 6 to 8 extra tasty cores.

Gulftown owners are predominantly upgrade aholic types. If it's better, we upgrade.

Does DAW use four threads?

Your games likely do not use any more than two. You're a fool to think it'll last till 2020. Go back to 1990. Anyone still gaming and doing audio work on computers from that time period? Didn't think so.

Oh and explain this one big guy. The i7 gets almost DOUBLE the FPS as a Q6600, at 1920x1200 no less, and can overclock better. http://www.techspot.com/review/336-cod-black-ops-performance/page8.html

Ok this comparison to a stock Q6600 is getting lame. Every enthusiast on our forum has been running Q6600 overclocked. Outside of SC2, Q6600 @ 3.7ghz is plenty fast for most games, which will become bottlenecked far quicker by OP's GTX460. Outside of games, of course 2500k/2600k @ 4.8ghz will be much faster.

Don't some games benefit from higher SB O/Cs . But of course those are badly made games . But if thats true why they in the reviews. Which is another topic.

Ya and 3 months latter the the IB 1155 guys will show off there 22nm ondie memory 6 core IVY Bridges. Ya I think 1155 this round is the right move all the way to Ivy.
