Which CPU is going to give better Folding@Home results?
(I suppose the correct answer is "BOTH"!)

I have the chance to buy a used HP i7 2600 rig for under $300 so I won't be out much... I can keep parts and/or sell off at profit. ;)

i7 2600 will run @ stock
i5 4670k can't overclock much... 4GHz or so 24/7.

I may just have to perform the experiment myself. For science!

i5-4670k @ 4GHz

~98.3w system draw with 7950 in.

It's been awhile since I folded (years), sorry I can't be of more help. Last I knew though GPU folding, especially on the Nv side was where the PPD/w was going.

Edit: Unless you did BigAdv I believe, I think you can get higher PPD if you have Linux tell your F@H client you have more cores and run BigAdv though you might need more core speed to beat the cutoff.

I'd check with bigger folding sites, like OCN.

You need an 8-core CPU to do BigAdv (Linux only), oh and not 8 threads, 8 cores (and 8 core Xeon w/HT or greater is best). That's a nice PPD on your Haswell, I thought I'd get a bigger bump when I went from my 920 to a 970, but they just threw bigger WUs at me that now take a 24 hours to run :'(

You need 16 cores or threads to get bigadv. I have 2 E5570 Xeon quad cores with HT for 16 threads, and only some of the bidadv units get the bonus (90k ppd or more) So right now its doing an 8101 and only gets 7,780 ppd.

The best box I have is 2 hex core E5639's on an SR-2 @ 2.8 ghz, getting 133k to 160k ppd. Thats 24 threads.

BigAdv is out of reach for anyone without workstation/server-class stuff.

That's simply way too expensive... :(

I just have this $300 option open to me which would grab the 2600k rig and a GT640 video card to pair up with my existing 4670k + GTX660

It might be money better spent to simply upgrade that video card and let it do more work than the CPU anyway.

...bearing that in mind, nVidia used to be the better Folder, but I remember a rumour that the latest F@H client used OpenCL and now favored ATI... Any advice there?

Wouldn't you be better off buying pcie extensions and getting graphics cards instead?

Pretty sure you can mod them and do it on x1 lanes as well.

If I did it with my board using molex powered extensions I could have 6 VGAs running on one platform, CPU is just not optimized there was no AVX code when I just tried it.

...and besides, the faster video card will be fun when it's game-time. ;)

Will grab the 2600k unit *IF* I can sell my 4670k rig at only a tiny loss... it'll feel like a net gain since I'd have a decent machine and $400-500 in my pocket.

My bad - thanks for the correction. That's a nice system and a nice PPD. Now that there are early completion bonus points for GPUs, I think my next standalone F@H system will be geared towards multiple GPUs as opposed to beefier CPU(s).

Hey Mark, why you need those cores on your rig.

Only reason I see for it is if your a Video Editing with Vegas and Premiere or DAW, digital audio workstation

You dont need those xeon cores with real time apps. 2.8Ghz gets blown away in single thread performance. gl

Dont give me any video benchie app or numbers. Play games and see if you like it.. thx .....
