Hi everyone!

First time building a PC, so wanted to get input from all the experts here :D

i7 2600 (default 3.4ghz, turbo on, HT on) with stock hsf
Gigabyte GA-P67A-UD4-B3
AMD 6770 1gb graphics
12gb RAM

got all my temperatures from hwmonitor

so far my idle temp is 35-40c
running 3DMark Vantage (free version) would get somewhere around 82c.
playing WoW would get around 65c

Is that temperature normal? I have 2 exhaust 120mm and 1 intake 120mm fan. All the fans are running fine.

Any suggestions? Thanks in advance!

Pretty normal with stock hsf

WoW only uses 2 cores so thats why its so much lower. Well, WoW can use 4 cores but very badly. 2 cores can be pegged while other 2 at 1-2%.

+1 - Yes normal for stock Intel cruddy cooler and exactly what others see at stock speeds.

My advice is pick up a $25-$35 cooler like the Cooler Master 212+ or newer 212+ EVO. That will keep it around 50C and even allow some mild overclocking.

thanks for the feedback guys!

I will look into those HSF this weekend at Frys.

what is the max temp before the CPU would clock down or be unstable? I am finding out from different sites it is 72.8C or even 100C... are any of these correct?

There is a feature called TM1 which is "thermally adaptive monitoring" -- such that the processor will throttle down at 72.6C if the feature is turned on in BIOS. You can turn that feature "OFF" or leave it "ON." I'd turn it OFF for stress-testing your over-clock settings while watching the temperatures carefully as you do so. Turn it back on when you've found your comfortable voltage and speed setting.

The 72.6C spec is for a temperature called TCASE -- the temperature at dead-center of the CPU's integrated-heat-spreader surface. In fact, there is no sensor available on the CPU that provides TCASE, but it is likely calculated in an algorithm using the core sensors of the processor. These should average about 10C higher than TCASE. This means that if you are using HWMonitor or similar to read the temperatures on the four cores, you should be able to sustain temperatures of around 80C degrees on the cores.

sandy bridge will not throttle at 72c I tried this and got it to throttle at 98c and it only thorttle down 100-200 mhz and would go from 5.1ghz to 4.8 back and forth as the temps would hit 98c then throttle and the second it went under 98 it would hit 5.2 again.

I use all thermal and throttling enabled and just ran linx 64 full blast at 4.9ghz and hit 73 c on a few cores with zero thorttling

just bought a CM Hyper 212+, and it is amazing!

stock clock speed, 26C idle, and prime95 was 59C max! :D thanks for the helps guys! time to overclock now!
