i5 temps and grease application

Trying to figure out where my problem lies in the temps on my new cpu. Running an i5 760 at 3.6Ghz 180 x 20 at 1.25 vcore and getting idle temps of 42C. Highest temp while encoding video has been 71C. This is using a Xigmatek 1283 HSF and from what I've read and seen, this is too high. I'd like to ask others here with similar set ups what their temps are. I'm also thinking I'm doing the TIM wrong. I spread a thin coat of AS5 on the cpu. Is the the right way for these cpus? Thanks.

Arctic Silver has tech manuals for different CPU's on their website. Their recommended methods vary a bit from one chip to the next. Does the heatsink get hot to the touch?

Only touched it after stressing it and it is warm. From what I've heard, low 60's with a good HSF is the norm when stressing the cpu at about 4Ghz so I'm too high especially with My 1283 which is still one of the better coolers.

Just checked the AS5 website and they recommend a vertical line which could be a problem with my HSF that has 3 heat pipes. A HSF with a soldered plate is looking like the best option for me.

Maybe that surface isn't completely flat, and you didn't have enough thermal compound to fill all the gaps.

I think your load temps are fine at your overclock. Your heatsink only has three heatpipes, so don't expect lower temps.
