i5 Stock heatsink

im getting an i5 2400 in a few weeks time and Im wondering if I'll be able to get away with using the stock cooler and fan?

The rig will be used for mostly gaming and will be in a small case (antec 300) so im thinking maybe I would need an aftermarket cooler, but if I can get away with the stock one then I will...

Do you plan to overclock or leave it at stock. If stock, the stock fan should be all right. For overclocking, get a decent aftermarket heatsink.

the stock heatsink should be ok for some mild overclocking but it's addicting, the higher you go, the more you want and the stock HSF will quickly reach it limits.

i dont plan on doing any OCing as im getting the H67 which wont even allow it

how is the stock fan though? Is it loud? That is another concern along with the cooling

That I don't know as I don't have an i5. What I do have is an i7 950 and that stock cooler was loud when under load, so I would think the i5 would be the same. The SB chips do run cooler than what I have so ymmv. What I would do is try the stock hsf and replace it if it's too noisy for you.

1. imo get the 2500k (even if you think you don't need it) because if resail value ect.
2. The stock heatsink is completely crap, I reapplied mine twice thinking I did something wrong because @ idle my temps were 40-50C, now with my cm 212 they are 30-40C
3. Every time I put the stock heatsink on I felt like I was breaking my motherboard. I was strategically pushing on the opposite side of my mobo to keep it from bending, because of those stupid pushpins.

It is fine. Just allow the motherboard to control fan speeds. You'll have to enable it in BIOS/UEFI. It will keep speeds/noise down when temperatures are fine.

40-50°C is nowhere near the limits of the CPU. CPU should be fine up to 85°C thereabouts.

Push pins are really easy to use if you know the trick to it. :whiste:

Foolproof way to install Intel push pins

It also really helps if the motherboard is NOT YET MOUNTED in the case. And yes, the board will flex.
