Well M denotes "mobile" I think,so for mobile it's true,for desktop it's not. Desktop i5 models are SMT-less, so 4C/4T.

There is significant difference, the guy at the store has very low knowledge in the field, this happens often

Intel desktop line-up

Celeron - single and dual core, no HT, low frequency, 1-2MB L3
Pentium - dual core, no HT, high frequency, 3MB L3
i3 - dual core, HT, high frequency, 3MB L3
i5 - quad core, no HT, high frequency, 6MB L3, partially and fully unlocked
i7 - quad core, HT, high frequency, 8MB L3, partially and fully unlocked

there are also desktop i5s which are dual cores but they are quite rare to meet
The dual cores are i5-650, i5-655K, i5-660, i5-661, i5-670, i5-680, i5-2390T and i5-3470T, rest of the i5 line is all quad core.

All mobile processors are dual cores with HT, including i3, i5 and i7, only i7 which ends it's type number by QM is quad core and had 8 threads.

Mobile i5s are indeed 2 cores, and 4 threads. In addition, the lower end i7s are also 2 cores, 4 threads, often with a more aggressive Turbo Boost and more L3 cache.

However, there are also quad core i7s that are clocked lower, but come with 4 cores, and 8 threads.

You can tell the difference between a dual core i7, and a quad core i7 as shown below, where x is the specific sku.

Intel Core i7-3xxxM (mobile dual core) Intel Core i7-3xxxQM (QM = mobile quad core)
