i5 750 review

It seems like if you were to step up to a i7 860 (1156) and compare that to an i7 940 (1366) the performance would be closer.

depends on your usage, HT seems only to help in encoding and 3D rendering. The lower TDP is definately a bonus for the home user and overclocker.

I'm not a hardcore gamer. I do mostly video encoding. Since i don't really overclock the i7 860 maybe better for me than the i7 920. Especially with the turbo for a little extra performance

Anyone else noticing that the games that the i7 loses are the games that take the biggest hit from HT?

*edit*
i guess i posted that too fast, they look pretty neck to neck, sucks that 1156 is only dual channel because it makes benchmarks less consistent from one to another because of the ram difference

i think it would be kinda cool to have a benchmark where 1336 runs in dual channel / HT off so we can see the benefits of having the PCI-E controller on package

The greatest improvement is power consumption. I was hoping we would see overclocking #s soon.

On a side note,

I contemplated upgrading my aging S775 platform. It has been difficult to justify spending $100 USD the same 6GBs of ram I already have, only it will be DDR3 variety. Plus $150 for the motherboard, or $250 in total before even touching the processor. For those building new systems from scratch, the Core i5 750 is a sure winner though!

For C2Q users though, it appears 2009 will again go down without major platform upgrades. CPU performance is sufficient already with most overclocked C2Qs. I remember in 2006 we went from P4 3.0-3.4ghz to C2D E6400 @ 3.4ghz, which at least doubled the performance (probably 4x). Now, the SSD market and videocard market is where most of the improvements will come.

Probably waiting until Sandy Bridge....and 8 cores 🙂

It doesn't look like the on-die PCI-E does anything on these tests as triple channel memory is 2-3% faster than dual channel on average. And that's about what these tests are showing. Of course we'll have to wait for other reviews to reproduce these results.

The lower power consumption is nice, about 55 DC watts less. I would guess 30 of that is the CPU 17 less on the chipset and 8 watts less on the MC/memory subsystem. Too bad there isn't an OC test. I really want to see if these OC better than 920 D0's.

I am probably beating the dead horse, but same goes for OC'd PIIs, if gaming is the only concern. That bodes well for me, I need every penny I can save for my next vid card 🙂

I'll be interested to see the results when a reputable site does them. The worry I have is that there were rumors of early Core i5s that didn't have Turbo mode properly enabled. Without that, these benchmarks would not be meaningful. Something other than a sketchy Chinese site with an grey-market processor would be cool.

Still, these performance numbers look excellent, and the life span of the LGA1156 should be long enough that we will get the chance to upgrade our processors once on a good board the first time around.

😛

Holy S**t!!

Did Intel post the "safe-zone" for voltages yet for these new chips? I wonder if 1.328 is dangerous for it.

Considering how much more people have been pumping into the LGA1366 chips, i don't see how 1.328v is even close to danger territory.

Wow, not bad. Big question there is, what are the load temps, and is it prime95 stable?

Probably not prime stable, but that certainly bodes well for its OC potential. Personally I would be ecstatic with a 3.8ghz oc on stock cooling. This proc seems almost too good to be true if it weren't for the pesky socket change. If these numbers are accurate I'll definitely be picking up an i5, though.

hmm, perhaps the i5 will be worth it after all 😀! Though I would wait till they have the SATA III issues fixed.

lol yea it looks to be an awesome platform. i have a friend who is planning to buy a new system soon (well, a few actually, but one is doing it asap), and im not sure what his budget is yet. if it turns out to be really tight, i could sell him my e5200 based system sans hard drive and have enough to buy a CPU, motherboard, and RAM. all i would need is a new case, PSU, and a 1156 mounting bracket for an S-1283 (could use it on my OCZ Vendetta 2 until i put a system on water), and i could have myself an i5, without putting myself back more than $150. considering i just spent 3 times that this week on a new headphone amp, my half of an iphone 3Gs + case, and supernatural season 4 on BD, i would say that's pretty reasonable lol
