my specs
i5 750 oc 3.59
biostar t5 xe sli
4gb mushkin silverline 1333
gtx280

my question is would it be wise to upgrade to faster ram. for a better overclock. i know 750 should be doing better than 3.59 oc. or just get a another set and run 8gb.

i use this computer for mostly gaming and i also do gaming streams on justin.tv

if you were in my shoes what would you do?

Guess it would depend on how high you wanna overclock the chip.

What settings are you currently using to achieve the 3.59ghz? 20x180?

Due to the 6-10x memory multipliers, the 750 isn't going to be RAM-speed limited by DD3-1333 in an overclock until you start pushing 4.4GHz, and, well, that's not happening on an i5 750 if you're staying in specs :p. As long as your current RAM runs decent timings at 1333MHz, you'll see no real world advantage to getting faster RAM (the only reason I have DDR3-2000 in my system is it was the same price as everything else at the time). Same thing with adding more RAM - if you aren't finding yourself RAM limited in applications and lots of paging going on, you aren't going to see any benefit from upgrading to 8GB either. My advice would be to save the money and put it towards an SSD, better monitor, or better graphics card if you're looking to upgrade something.

171 x 21 for the overclock. 1.28v

and to the other poster. i already have an ocz agility 60 gb ssd. and for a graphics upgrade im waiting for the 480/470 to release so i can pick up another gtx 280 for sli.

the reason i am considering extra ram is because of streaming.

but if i could hit 4ghz with new sticks that could be an option tooo...

But you missed what I'm saying - you don't need new RAM to overclock higher. For instance, 190x21 = 3.99GHz, run a RAM multiplier of 6 and you're only at 1140MHz on the RAM. Depending on what timings and voltage that takes, you could also try the 8x multiplier and see if the RAM will do 1520MHz.

The thing is your probably running your ram out of spec when you try for higher speeds on your cpu. Best thing to do is drop your memory divider down to 6 to take memory out of the picture until you find what your cpu will do.

Highest I can boot windows with my 750 is 4.597ghz....But it wouldn't be a 24\7 thing as voltages are too high to run it. Just did it to see and for a screenshot :)

Highest 24\7 on mine would be in sig with just the cpu vtt slightly out spec 1.27v

Look in bios for DRAM frequency should be close to where you changed the cpu frequency. Just change it to the lowest it'll go for now. As far as trying for more overclock on the cpu that's up to you.

Heat will be your enemy and voltage. Try to keep the cpu vtt voltage under the 1.21v max.

I'm on water so I don't even worry about the heat :)

okay so i messed around with the dram frequency and still no dice.....

i was able to overclock the cpu a litte more with these settings
175x21 3.68
vcore 1.30
vtt 1.80
pll 1.85
dram 1.645

i think i have a bad setup but oh well.

Kinda hard to overclock over the internet but I'll try to help you if you want :)

It's possible you gotta dud combo but could just be a couple of settings holding you back also.

I'll suggest the following settings based on your manual I downloaded.

In the overclocking section change the following and see what happens.

Over-clocking navigater to manual unless you already did.
CPU Frequency 180
DRAM Frequency smack it down to lowest for now
DRAM Timing Configuration go into this and make sure is on Auto
Clock Gen Configuration go into this and set it to Manual and make sure it's set to 100

Voltage Control go into this and set the following for starters
>CPU Vcore try around 1.325v
>CPU VTT try it at 1.100v
>CPU PLL set it to 1.80v
>DRAM Voltage set it to whatever your ram default voltage is
>MEM Ref Voltage leave it on Auto
>PCH Voltage try it at 1.100 my board goes lower and I run it at 1.075
>CPU Load line enable it for now
>PWM Frequency try it on default setting

Intel PPM Configuration go into this and set the following
>Intel(R)SpeedStep(tm) tech [Enabled]
>Intel (R)Turbo Mode tech [Enabled]
>Intel C-STATE tech [Disabled].........................Should kill the 24x turbo multiplier possible problem your having.

The following should either vanish or grey out....LMK what happens here.

C State package limit setting [Auto]
C3 State [ACPI C2]
C6 State [Enabled]
C1 Auto Demotion [Enabled]
C3 Auto Demotion [Enabled]

Save and exit and if it works it'll be at 3.78ghz and higher will be just a couple of clicks away in the bios.

ken

tried your suggestion. but the comp will not boot.

it seems enabling speedstep and turbomode. doesnt help. i have them off now

seems like i got a dud or motherboard or ram holding me back

Guess you could test the MB by keeping your mem at lowest then drop your CPU multiplier down. Keep voltages at whatever they are at your highest overclock for now. But double check the CPU vtt voltage keep under 1.20v max.

Try with 15x multiplier or so. The just bump the CPU frquency up and see if it'll boot up. Your board may not like high CPU frequency at all. You may have a fsb hole also?

Just gotta play around and see what CPU frequencies your board likes then you can up the multiplier and play with voltages.
