Not looking to break the bank here. I want to upgrade from the parts in my signature, but I will be keeping my case, GPU and PSU. I don't really game too much anymore, but if I get bored or a great new game comes out, I would still like to play on high settings. Mostly I am doing multi-tasking, listening to music, watching movies, etc etc. I want something that will also be easy to upgrade to a better cpu in the future. And the winner is..?

It simply isn't worth changing your ram and motherboard just to get a new quad core when the Q9550 is almost as fast as the Core i5 and even faster than that AMD quad. Find one used or new and buy it.

i think for a i5 750 upgrade you need: 200 cpu+110 mb+100 ram=400
going x4 620, you can keep ram, 100 cpu+90 mb = 190.

so if you short on cash get x4, i gone from e7xxx to a x4 620, felt application go faster, encoding x264 is quite a bit faster, things like virus scanning almost unnoticeable in the backgroud. anyways, but if you do have 400, go with i5 750, oc to close to 4ghz, and you will not be disappointed at all.

I thought about q9550s it's about 200 used on ebay. bringing the total cost to about 300, so I decided just go with x4 (found a dude selling oem versions for just 75) saved some cash up for the 32nm generation.

you know how much you want to spend, you have a ton of choices here, my take is if you need the power then spent the cash, if not, buy something just enough save the cash for later upgrades.

Q9550s is extremely overpriced.

BTW, Q9550 was merely $179.99 at Microcenter about two weeks ago.

I would also propose this one. If you are lucky enough to have a microcenter nearby, and don't mind mATX, you can get the Athlon II X4 620 with a gigabyte GA-MA785gm-US2H for less than $150. Sell your old mobo to recover even more money and you are talking new quad core system on the cheap.

Yes, the Q9550 it is faster, but it would be almost $100 more expensive......

Get a used one on craigslist or something. I saw a Q9550 around where I live for about $100.
