I put together pc with an 4670 with a 212evo on a asrock extreme3 board. I'm not really sure of all the in's and out's of properly o/c'ing it. I've read some instructions and threads on the web about doing it, at first I fiddled with some of the voltages and the multipliers, but came back to putting it in the auto setting for the voltages and kept the multiplier set at 44x. Seems to be working although I kinda questioning the temps. running it with stock specs without o/c'ing, the temps are mid 70's, running the 44x oc it runs mid-upper 80s using the intel burner program. Sitting idle either way its about 29-31. I've bought two scythe fans yesterday to replace the default fan on the 212, along with some other 140mm fans for the case.

Am I doing this right in regards to OC'ing it? Are the temp's in line to what I should be seeing with the heatsink I got?

As long as you're not hitting 100 degrees you are good to go .. even 99 would be acceptable, haswell will throttle at 100 to keep the chip safe so i'd say you're good to go.

Used to be Intel Burn Test was the go to for worse case scenario temps. With Haswell the current champion is Linpack 11 as it uses Haswells feature set to bring on the HEAT. Most likely you'd throttle at current overclock....Unless you won the thermal lotto!

If your rig is stable then real world use temps are what counts anyways.

Many Haswell CPUs will throttle at stock clocks with the stock cooler running Linpack 11 so I wouldn't worry too much. I use Aida64 FPU-only test as a realistic "worst case" scenario. It's about 8C higher than IBT or Prime95.

The problem with leaving voltage on Auto is that the voltage may be higher than it needs to be. It works for achieving an initial overclock, but further tweaking can help you reduce voltage and as a result, temps.

I havent seen any yet that did under normal operation. And Mine doesnt do that either. if it did I would consider it faulty.

Usually when it happens, its due to MCE on the mobo. Or default auto overclocking if you want from mobo makers.

Indeed. I've seen these statements about throttling @stock under AVX2 loads several times here. I find it hard to believe, but I have no Haswell rig of my own to test.

Shintai, if you have the time, maybe you could start a thread about this issue yourself, conduct a Linpack 11 AVX2 @ stock test, post your results, and invite other Haswell owners to do the same? Would be a good way to really tackle the throttling claims.

See here for example:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gqr06oL_hwk

You can see that it idles in the low 30's before he starts the test, then jumps to 100C as it's started.

There isn't a lot of data for the stock cooler, because those who know enough to actually run stress tests probably will never use the stock cooler. Those people will replace the TIM with something much better like MX4 also. Kind of wish I had tested my 4770K with the stock cooler and TIM before delidding but oh well.

TechPowerUp have switched to the 4770 for their cooler reviews:
http://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/beQuiet/DarkRockPro2/6.html

Notice how the Respire T40 hits 86C at stock. It's certainly not a great cooler, but it does use heatpipes and looks much beefier than the stock cooler:
http://www.nzxt.com/product/detail/85-respire-t40-cpu-cooler

In my experience, if you're in the high 80's in the AIDA64 FPU test, you'll be *very* close to 100C with AVX2 Linpack.

You do know what MCE is, right?

IB could also overheat with MCE on and stock cooler. But again, the stock cooler was not designed for overclockign and overvoltage.

Even IDC made that mistake. The stock turbomode is 4/3/2/2, not 4/4/4/4 as some mobo makers likes to set as default. Not to mention using the VIDs.

Not to mention I got zero trust in random youtube videos. Specially some without any information at all.

I will see if I have time to get a thread going next week that I can monitor for input and sort in contributions. So we can avoid more of these myths.
