In all the comparisons seen, the 4670 seems to be faster while the 6500 is newer and more energy efficient. What performance gains are made with the 6500 (if any)? Thanks!

Although Skylake(i5 6500) has slightly higher IPC, the gains in IPC are negated by the fact that the Haswell i5 4670 has higher clock speeds. In terms of real world performance there isn't any noticeable difference between them.

6500 could theoretically be faster with faster ddr4 memory in memory-sensitive apps like gaming

In late 2018? I would be considering Ryzen or Coffee Lake instead.

What are you going to be using them for? Are you building a system, looking at prebuilts, whatever? If I were building from scratch today, as whm said, I would look at the i3 8100 (quad core) or even better, i5 8400.
