I just want to know that if i plan on overclocking it slightly (about 3.7ghz) should i get an aftermarket heatsink fan for it? I'd like not to spend the extra money on one, but if it is highly recommended then i will.

You can only overclock K models.

puuu... ahhhh... welll mmmm.... bclk.

The cpu already turbos to 3.7ghz when only heavily using 2 cores.

I think if you have an Overclocking oriented motherboard, you can set it to Turbo All cores, and get 3.8 - 3.9 ghz out of it by adjusting bclk. :)

Best plan, sell it, recover some cost, buy a k-part cpu.

yeah, do you think it would be necessary to get an aftermarket heatsink for that?

Adjusting bclk more than a couple percent is just inviting System wide instability.

First, you can OC a non K model up to the Turbo core frequency.
Secondly, You will need a P67, Z68 or Z-77 motherboard to be able to change the CPU multiplier.
Third, You can only OC bclk by up to 103-105MHz on those motherboards.
Fourth, Depending on the ambient temperature, I believe you will not need an after market heat-sink fan if you only OC up to 3.8 to 4GHz with default voltage on the IB Core i5.

I built a 3770S system and used the turbo slider to clock it up to 4GHz. Under full 8 thread prime95 load it got within 10 degrees of TJMax. Without HT I would expect 5-10 degrees cooler. I would go for it. Chances are, normal use will never push it past 82C-85C.

It is silly that they would run that hot, but w/e, welcome to the new intel.

I would think you would be good with a "mild" OC as well, as AtenRa has indicated.

You get what, four bins free? So 3.7Ghz four cores/4.1Ghz 1 core?

Looks like you should be good to go for some free speed so long as you have turbo.

I think if the i3 series had turbo, so you could get that extra ~15% clock speed, they would be an even better value. Not that they aren't already a good buy at the right price...

Should be able to goto 105 bclk without issue and no you don't need a different cpu fan

Most i5 3550's can overclock a little, mine has been running stable at 4.1(4.2 ish) ghz for the past 6 months. I found a slight increase in BCLK (no more than 103 recommended and multiplier set at 41. That is running with a well vented Zalman Z9 case and a £25 Akasa aftermarket cpu cooler.

Will find exact specs ect and post, just sort of stumbled across this thread and joined in.

According to this article you are limited to turbo OC 4 bins on 3xxx CPU , so 3.9 on all cores .

http://www.xbitlabs.com/articles/cpu/display/core-i5-ivy-bridge_11.html#sect0

I would not use the stock retail HS ,even though it will probably work fine, temps will be on high side (80's+) .
I would get cheap 4 pipe direct contact tower ,like a CM 212evo but there are plenty of copies of that design , this way you be around 60's c under load .

That just my opinion I don't like seeing high temps, even if it can run them fine .
