Guys I need a little advice here, I am going to build an HTPC that is going to stream media but also its going to do serious gaming. Like I am going to be wanting to max games out on this system. I can grab a i5 4430 right now brand new for $150, or I can grab a i5 3470s for $130. My understanding is the 4430 has a max boost of 3.2ghz and the 3470s has a max boost of 3.6ghz. Isnt the 3470s in this case the better cpu? Even with its base clock of 2.9ghz. Could I technically run this with its boost on at all times and out perform the 4430?

4430 is 3.0Ghz base, 3470s is 2.9Ghz base. 4430 is 3.2Ghz max turbo, 3470s is 3.6Ghz max turbo. Haswell is roughly 10% faster at same clocks.

4430 runs a 0/1/2/2 turbomode.
3470s runs a 3/4/6/7 turbomode.

4440 cost the same as the 4430 if you can get that. And the 4440 would be faster in everything. Depending on the turbomodes of the s model can be really painful.

If it is to run 24/7 I would also consider Haswells lower idle consumption.

You should calculate CPU+MB price difference and what that difference can get you in terms of more GPU power.

If difference is not enough to bring you a clear advantage, go for the Haswell (4440).
