i5-2550k to an i5-3570k on same z68 mobo... issue resolved..

Hi Everyone,

I still have my i5-2550k installed in my ASRock Z68 mobo. I have the i5-3570k sitting around waiting for my GTX 670 to arrive so I can install them both and give my brother my i5-2550k.

When I swap out the i5-2550k and plug in the i5-3570k would I have to do anything else with the ASRock Z68 mobo or it should work fine automatically?

Or should I do a clean install of the OS and everything after I plug in the i5-3570k?

Thanks in advance.

Update: Took out i5-3550k and plugged in i5-3570k, now no video signal... help? Thanks in advance...

Update: Issues Resolved! Everyone on Anandtech are Awesome! Thanks!

should work just fine, you're barely changing anything as far as the OS is concerned. the graphics card would require more work than the CPU, but if you're nvidia to nvidia that's no problem

Thanks everyone! That is the reason I went with the mobo for the Ivy CPU swap out... don't get me wrong - I love the i5-2550k, but when my brother offered to purchase it I decided to use the money to get an i5-3570k.

He was paying you the equivalent of a 3570k for a 2550k?

I actually bought the 2550k for $135 from a MC deal... I sold him my 2550k and gave him a new ASRock Z68 Extreme3 Gen3 Mobo for $250 (extra mobo I got from The MC mobo combo with i5-3570k purchase)...

Then when the i5-3570k was released I bought an i5-3570k with ASRock Z68 Extreme3 Gen3 mobo combo for $259.98...

So all I'm doing is giving him a new unopened mobo, swaping out the i5-2550k and giving it to him...

When I first made the trip to MC back in March he was hinting on upgrading so I built my Rig in case he wanted to buy it...

He's currently waiting for an AMD 7850 to drop to $200 to complete his build.

I'm keeping my mobo so I don't have to reinstall everything... so overall I only spent $9.98 extra and some gas 😀

He wanted to buy my i5-2550k... so I sold it to him and went with the i5-3570k for PCI Express 3.0 support and my incoming GTX 670... Yes, new toys are always fun! And no, I'm not a heavy overclocker = I get paranoid even if I just do a 10% overclock...

UPDATE: Okay, I took out the i5-2550k and plugged in the i5-3570k, turned on the machine and got NO video signal... I tried my GTX 570 HDMI connection, the Mobo's HDMI connection and the VGA - AND nothing shows up! Not even a boot screen so I can't go into bios to tinker...

So I thought I got a bad CPU, made the 1.5 hour round trip to my nearest Microcenter in Tustin to exchange for the a new i5-3570k... plugged that sucker in and same thing - no video signal...:'(

I kept the same mobo that was holding the 2550k and all I did was plug in the two i5-3570ks in my build - ASRock Extreme3 Gen3 which is suppose to natively support Ivy Bridge?

Does anyone know a fix for this?

Help Please?! 😵:'(D:

Would a clean install fix the issue above? How would I be able to do that if I get no video signal?

well that is interesting.

when i first fired up my new ivy setup i didn't get a video signal either. once i plugged in the graphics card i did though i swapped between ports to figure out which is active.

did you try putting the 2550 back in to see if that fixed it?

might want to reset the bios between the 2550 and the 3770 just in case some setting is stuck

Thanks! I followed your advice and everyone elses... 😀

I plugged the 2550k back in... updated the bios... and plugged back in the ivy 3570k, prayed 😱, and it worked after I enabled ACHI in BIOs for my SSD to ... 😵

However WEI for my Samsung SSD was previously a 7.9 and now its a 7.3? D:

probably gotta tweak your settings. And overclock.

WEI scored don't really mean anything

True, it is kind of MS way of getting people to buy and upgrade more... but after I got everything working I decided to do a clean install and just finished right now... and ran WEI again and here are the results:

Processor = 7.6

Memory (RAM) = 7.9

Graphics = 7.9

Gaming Graphics = 7.9

Primary Hard Disk = 7.9

Before the fresh install the Primary HD (SSD) was at 7.3 when I plugged in the i5-3570k down from a 7.9 when I had the i5-2550k...

After the fresh install my Samsung SSD is now back up to 7.9... funny D:

So basically you asked a question here, was given the correct answer multiple times, ignored it, and MC is now paying the price for your ignorance and incompetence.

You'd only get PCIe 3.0 support when using BOTH: a Z77 chipset motherboard AND an IvyBridge CPU. But: PCIe 2.0 wouldn't provide much of slowdown, anyway.
Side note: To clean out "ghost devices", I'd recommend the following procedure:
Open a command prompt as Administrator.
Type:
set devmgr_show_nonpresent_devices=1 (Enter)
start devmgmt.msc (Enter)
when Device Manager opens, click the View button, select "Show hidden devices".
Click each "+" to view device details.
Right-click & delete any grayed-out devices.

We all make mistakes... it is how we learn and why I'm here in the forums... I didn't ignore their answers - I thought the BIOS was up to date because they advertised supporting PCI-Express 3.0 with Ivy Bridge on the z68 board - the box/manual didn't state BIOs update required (at least I couldn't find any)...it only said so on their website...D:

Thanks everyone!
