I5 2500k temp too high

Hello,

I recently bought a new i5 2500k processor along with a cooler master hyper 212 plus cooling fan and a msi P67A-C45. After applying and reapplying the heat-sink over 10 different times I couldn't get the idle temperature below 60°C. I then tried the stock fan with it's own TIM and the temperature rose to 80°C in the bios.

Thinking there was a problem with the motherboard or the processor, I returned both products but after having received and installed the replacements the idle temperature (with the cooler master 212 plus) was still 40°C in the bios and 47°C in windows with the fan at max RPM. I really don't understand why it is heating up so much, the heat-sink seems correctly positioned and I have tried all layouts and amounts of thermal paste.

I would also like to add that I have only built 2 PCs but the first one I built with the same fan and a phenom 955 x4 BE idles at 32-35°C in the same house.

Can you please help me solve this problem?

Something is wrong if your idle temp is that high, as you may have guessed. Use CPU-Z or the task manager to make sure your CPU is actually idle when you think it is. Are you overclocking? Do you have speedstep enabled? Did you make sure to peel off the plastic protector on the Hyper212+ before you stuck it on (gotta cover all the bases)? Did you follow their installation instructions on Youtube when you installed? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hSq_xbxsm7Q

For an HDT cooler like the Hyper 212+ you cannot just put a little bead of thermal paste in the middle. You have to spread lines along each of the heatpipes. If you don't do this correctly, the heatsink will get poor contact with the CPU and may cause your temps to be high like they are.

Back when I had a Hyper 212+, my max load temps @ 4.2 GHz were around 70C. Now that I have a D14 my max load temps @ 4.7 GHz are in the 68-69C range.

Hi, thank you for your replies.

I have tried all sorts of application techniques including spreading the thermal paste on the bottom of the heatpipes with a template.

As for taking the plastic bit off: yes I did. The processor is not overclocked, I have followed the instructions and already successfully installed the fan once on another pc. I have verified that the cpu is idle and I get high results in the bios too. As for speedstep I don't know but the settings should be on default.
