So I have a really large heatsink with a vertical fan inside that I had been using on my E8400 for the past 2 years. I am trying to figure out if this is better for an i5 2500k than the stock fan? I don't know the brand/model of the one I currently have.

Stock fan/sink:

My current one:

A 775 HSF won't work in 1155/1156 mounting holes.

When I place it on top, the screw holes seem to line up, but I have not tried to screw it in yet. What in particular should I be looking for re: it not fitting?

Yes, the holes need to align properly. Clean and replace the TIM.

Try this:

Very reasonably priced and very effective..

If you want more options:

You don't have to buy from Newegg either. Just identify the one you want, and find at the retailer of your choice.

I picked up the 212+ at Microcenter for the same price as Newegg..

Why buy new? what's wrong with what he has if it works?

Shrug I zip tied a 120mm case fan to my old AMD 620 stock heatsink. Dropped temps and was less then $1? Plus I installed a free Thermltake fan control knob on it :awe: DIY FTW

MJ - what heatsink is that? Looks like it may be adjustable, so there's a possibility it'll fit.

It came from a Dell XPS 630i (775 socket) desktop.

I ended up having to put the stock fan on for now. The holes lined up on the MB ok, but rather than being push pins, it uses screws. Dell had a plastic panel under the MB with the screw holes, and of course THAT didn't align. Sigh.

I already had the CPU up to 4Ghz while playing COD Black Ops and my case and CPU temps were around 55c, so I'm not overly concerned for now, though the stock fan is loud. I did remove the stock TIM and replace it with artic silver 5.

The hole spacing is different from 775 to 1156 by 3MM. While it may not seem like much, it MAY be enough to not allow the cooler to seat properly unless you do some modification to the mounting.
