I just upgraded to an i5-2500K on an Asrock Pro3 motherboard.
I downloaded latest cpu-z and ran it.
I overclocked to 4.4 Ghz.

cpu-z shows 2 cores and 2 threads.
It correctly identifies the cpu as an i5-2500K.

I am confused. I thought this was a quad core cpu.
Is the processor defective?
Did I set something incorrectly in the UEFI?

I am running win7 x64.

Open up MSConfig. Go to the boot tab and select "Advanced Options" while your C: drive is highlighted. The were will an option to tell Windows how many cores to use. You need to make sure the box isn't checked, this way Windows will use all.

I've seen people who've upgraded from a dual core to quad core have to go through this quite a bit.

(sic)Klown,
That was the problem.
Thanks very much.
It now shows 4 cores, 4 threads.

I had upgraded from a Core 2 Duo and the msconfig settings must have been left over from the earlier system.

I had once known about that msconfig option. But, I forgot all about it.
You saved me a lot of time and resolved the confusion.

How do I open up MSConfig from Windows 7 ? Thanks.

Click on start button and choose run msconfig.exe.
If you don't see the run option:
right click the start button
select properties
start menu tab
click "customize" button
scroll down and select "run command"
