I5-2400 Temps

Hey guys. First post here so let me just say ... Hey guys.

Anyway, I am currently transcoding something in Vuze and it is loading my quad core CPU to 100% ( some bouncing between all 4 cores from 100% to say, 95% ). I am looking at the core temperature ( using Core Temp software along with that gadget that shows your CPU loads ) and it is currently between 70c and 75c. This is currently minute 20 of the transcoding ( and god is this FAST compared to my old CPU ) so I think this 75c might be the max limit of what this CPU will hit.

So for a full load of 100% ( ive never seen this percentage before on all 4 cores ) is this temperature good? Or is it a temperature I will want to see * work on * by upgrading my stock equipment. All my equipment is stock. Stock paste, heat sink, stock fans in my Cooler Master Elite HAF case, etc.

Thanks for any replies.

Oh, and for more information.

I am overclocked on this CPU to currently 3.5Ghz from the original 3.1Ghz. Dropping the OC will of course drop the temperatures, from what I know.

75C is acceptable for a stock cooler. Get a cheap heatsink like the CM Hyper212 Evo if you're concerned about the temps. It should also make your rig much more silent.

Overclocking a Core i5 2400? o_O Are you fiddling with the turbo functions?

No I have a Z68 motherboard which allows overclocking of this 2400 to 3.9Ghz with the multiplier changes.

The motherboard also came with a function called QuickBoost which allows auto-OC'ing between 3.3Ghz ( Faster ), 3.5Ghz ( Turbo ) and 3.6Ghz ( TwinTurbo ).

But I just have to change the multiplier to 39 in the BIOS to move it up to 3.9Ghz. Pretty simple with the Gigabyte Z68-DS3 motherboard.

I'm not really worried, just as long as that temp is OK for the CPU. If it is, im satisfied.

Oh and amazingly even now I can't even hear this system. Seriously. Almost no sound coming from the system at all. Really the only sound is from the stock fans which I think are not even turned up all the way. I think. I run a Radeon 6770 as well which seems to max out at 68c while playing games like Battlefield 3 and such and the load during gameplay is at 98%. Never seen the GPU load hit 100% for some reason.

AFAIK only the Core i5 2500K or Core i7 2600K is able to do any overclocking regardless of which type or brand of motherboard you have.

I'd like a screenshot of CPU-Z showing the overclocked speed at nearly 100% load.

I'm running an i5-2300. When I burned the machine in, running all 4 cores at 100% overnight, they were running in the low 60s with a stock cooler.

It's probably the OC'ing adding a bit of heat to the overall package. I'm going to change it now to 3.9Ghz and see what it does at 100% loads while doing these transcodes.

But ... well actually I'll save that for tomorrow, its way past my bed time. Work at 6:00am tomorrow morning ... ouch!

No problem

Guess I am at 3.6Ghz. Thought it was 3.5Ghz but I'm constantly changing it lol.

I've heard before in the past that it is possible to 'overclock' non K processors a few speed bins above its max turbo frequency but nothing more than than the K processors could.

Anyway if possible grab an aftermarket cooler. Some like the one I mentioned is pretty cheap for what it can do.

Yeah it will only go to 3.9Ghz. Nothing over that is accepted in the Multiplier in the BIOS.

I've had it to 3.986 before in CPU-Z. But didn't see much difference so scaled it back to 3.5-3.6Ghz which seems to be the CPU's best spot.

But yeah, its nothing like a 2500k going from 3.5Ghz to 4.8 with a few changes lol. This can go from 3.1Ghz to 3.9Ghz max. I think 4.0 is reachable with other changes from what I read on the internet but i really do not want to mess with voltages or whatever.
