I am having a hard time selecting. In the past when I've gone to do a system build there has been a clear choice where features and price hit the sweet spot, but this time I'm having a tough time seeing it. Looking to spend $250 or less.

At the moment I'm between MSI and ASUS

ASUS - HERO is the board I'm looking at but I hesitate here because I've been unhappy with this ASUS p67 board that has problems with coming out of sleep mode. ASUS has acknowledged the problem - and claims to have solved it - but they haven't - at least not for me. That kind of track record worries me. Newegg reviews on this board show numerous defects.

MSI - Missing SATA express but otherwise a good board.

I haven't looked at other manufacturers - what am I missing?

You don't -need- to spend $250 on your mainboard. Unless you want to of course.

A good standard Z97 board would be the ASUS Z97A(R), Gigabyte GA-Z97X-UD3(-BK) or -UD5(-BK). There is little reason to go above them, unless there is some feature you really need on higher-end boards. Use the money saved for a more powerful CPU or graphics card.

The Gigabyte GA-Z97X-UD3 is a fine board with all the features you'll need.

I went with the ASUS Z97M-PLUS LGA 1150 so far so good. I donot OC, so was looking for a good board with some options. Built it 6/6/14 and been running since.

well, because I also need to rebuild my gaming pc, so i already get my eyes on msi

i was planning to get asus because the sata-e, but after i do the google search, i didnt find the sata-e device yet, so I choose msi for my gaming mb.

anyway, both asus and msi are good, if under $250, you can try either asus z97 hero or msi z97 gaming 7
