i3 vs i5 vs is7 looking for a notebook

I'm looking for a large 17” notebook to be used as a desktop replacement. I noticed that all the cpus are dual core. Is it worth getting the i5 over the i3 or the i7 how much real world performance difference do they have.
What 17” notebook would you recommend for under $1000. I can't tell which models are new which are old. What brand should I be looking at?

It all depends on what you're looking for.

Are you interested in certain specs, certain screen types, etc etc

Anyway personally I think you could try the HP outlet store or check out ebay and pick up a refurbished HP envy 17 as a decent starting point.

I was thinking that i3 +ssd might be best. The only problem I have now is what brand? and is lack of USB 3 a big deal? Since the only company I see with USB3 is acer

Well here in canada, the i5 is usually just a $50 upgrade from the i3... for your uses i3 is probably enough but personally, I think the ability for the i5 to turboboost is worth the extra 50, provided the laptop has decent cooling.

I don't know about the xoticpc recommendation though... seems like that link is spammed for every single laptop recommendation thread regardless of whether the specs fit with what the op is looking for. I mean, he is deciding between i3 and i5... I'm sure he doesn't require a gtx 570m......

Well if it fits the budget and the requirements then why not? The linked machine has 8GB of ram and an I5 in its base config. It's a DTR machine with a decent 17.3" matte display.

Unless he isn't using his own money, I'm sure he'd rather get the laptop that fulfills his requirements rather than adding in parts he will never use just to spend more money.... I mean even if he had to spend $1000 a cpu upgrade would do him more good than a gpu upgrade based on his uses.

The dual core i7's are not, in my opinion, a real i7, and it's definitely not worth the premium for an i7 unless you're getting one of the QM models, which are true quad cores with hyper threading and the best bet if you're doing some heavy processing.

He never actually specified if gaming was an issue, only "DTR" so really he needs to be more specific.

I think he just needs it for basic email/web/documents/etc... I mean people that need heavy duty graphic cards usually know they need it =P

The question is, would you like to be able to game on it. If not, you can probably find something for $400-500. For a 17" with discrete graphics you are looking at least $700-800.

I won't be gaming on it. I am going to BB to look at what they have. So far it looks like the rez on most laptops is crap I would think that they would be 1080 by now but they are not

There are tons of 1080p laptops out there, BB just sells stripped down versions 90% of the time, and one of the first things they cut down is the screen quality. It's not a bad place to go look and just get a feel for a laptop, but never buy one from them.
