Depends on what you're using the cores for. If you're going to drop some cash on an upgrade you might as well go for ADL. Prices have dropped considerably since it was released. Check out PCPartPicker.com and see what it would add up to.

Yeah, if you're just doing a cheap drop in cpu upgrade its probably not a bad one for $50-75. Jumping up to a 4c/8t or a 6c/12t would be better but I'd guess the prices on a used i7 are still sorta high these days. At that point, I'd look at 12th gen/Alderlake as TechJunky suggested. A 12100 or i5 12400f with cheaper mobo and old system's ram might be a better deal.

Certainly. 2 more cores, higher clocks, more cache, faster memory support = significant improvement across the board.

It is always best to provide what games you play or want to in the future. The Polaris will be the bottleneck the vast majority of the time. If you are a heavy Battlefield 5 player or another title that can hammer the CPU threads, then the i5 will struggle bus it at times too.

I say go for it if the i5 is a good price, particularly if recouping part of the cost by selling the i3. Otherwise, yeah, time to upgrade the platform.

Part of the problem is, that 9th-gen i5 doesn't have HT, correct me if I'm mistaken. If it did, it would be a no-brainer, but like the AMD 3500X, a 6C/6T CPU can still get bottlenecked by some modern titles.

Nope unfortunately most of 9 Gen cpus doesn't have HT. Maybe 9900k but thats too much money for its age.

I think BoomerD wouldn't mind giving you his i7-9700K for the right price :)

Alternatively, pick up a really cheap Ryzen 5500 with a B450 mobo.

Your current DDR4 should work fine with that CPU/mobo combo.

Even cheaper with A520: https://pcpartpicker.com/list/RCv3k9

BIOS update may be an issue, though. You may have to rent a compatible CPU to update to the latest BIOS to support the 5500.

This Gigabyte mobo can update BIOS without CPU: https://pcpartpicker.com/list/9wzkXy
