Max memory speed is 2400 the i3-8100 is allowing. Can I buy 3200 and let it down clock itself so when I buy a new CPU upgrade I will already have the fast memory?

Yes you can buy whatever DDR4 memory and it will work on the default speed of what the CPU is intended for.

Why not just buy a Z board and run the memory at 3200, and then you'll still have a Z board when you upgrade the CPU?

Awesome! Thanks fellas. I'll get one of these Z boards they are selling now and some 3200.

Why did you buy i3 8100 and Z board in first place?
grabbing i5 or r5 to much?

What some people did : They grabbed R5 1600 (200$) with A320 (60$) and fast memory 140-150$ (running at 2933-3200Mhz). 65W TDP 6C/12T with almost 50GB/s bandwidth.

I want to run stock and save electricity. I don't think I will need more than this i3-8100 gaming at 1080p. I am a rather conservative gamer who is okay with just enough.

I didn't buy a board yet but it would be wise to get a z board so in a couple years I can drop something else in.

You're speaking to someone who spent 6 years with a phenom 2 ;) This thing is gonna smoke

Well that the problem with Intel there is no guarantee.
I know stock is fine, so thats why A320 (no OC - only memory and very cheap - 60$) + R5 1600 (low tdp and boost).
Thats why I said it:
i3 120$ + 120$ Z board = 240$ 4C/4T
R5 200$ + 60$ A320 = 260$ 6C/12T

I didn't mean it like that - to force AMD, just for the price. It is true that A320 is dead end, but at least 6C/12T will last.

I know what you mean but by no means are games going to be unplayable with 4 cores in the next 4 years. And by the time you all need cores with extra threads for gaming you'll want to upgrade anyhow.

It's all good trust me. 8100 is no slouch for the budget minded gamer at 1080p. Did I wants a 4c 4T cpu? Yea. Do I have it in front of me? Nope. I impulsed bought the 8100 and I'll have to deal
