Do I need anything more than the stock cooler for an i3-4340? This will be a computer for the kids. It will be mostly used for the internet, iTunes, light gaming.

Thanks,
Josh

Meh, Intel stock coolers are fine. AMD CPUs would be a different story . Also, the 4340 is overkill for that. If you didnt buy it yet, I would see if I can get the core i3-4130. The 4340 is only ~2-3% faster for ~$20 more.

What would be more appropriate for a kids computer? I have the following items to reuse:

2. I would like to keep the total cost under 350 not including an operating system.

3. I will order parts from the USA

5. I would like to stick with intel processors

6. I have the following parts I would like to reuse:

  • Antec three hundred ATX Mid tower
  • Thermaltake W0116RV 750 Watt Power supply.
  • Intel x25-M 80 GB SSD
  • WD green 1TB drive
  • DVD Burner
  • Monitor
  • Mouse

7. No Overclocking

8. Planning on running one 19" 1280x1024 monitor.

9. I plan to build it in the next week or two.

Oh, the i3 will work great, but I would probably spec a G3220 given the intended usage. Unless the PC gets bogged down with excess running processes, it's unlikely there would be a perceptible difference between the two CPUs. One way to keep things running good is to make sure the kids do not have admin privileges.

Minecraft would be the only PC game right now. All other games they play are internet games.

I put a 4330 on and ITX motherboard in an ITX case. There was room for an ATX power supply CX 430M so I used a standard retail cooler and then mounted the power supply upside down over the CPU so it helped to suck out air coming off the CPU.

Consider: If you are buying at microcenter it might make more sense to step up to the i3 4340 and get $30 off a mobo combo. If the kiddies start doing bigger badder games drop in a GPU.

Can you be more specific about the details of Microcenter's pricing structure that support this point? The G3220 is $50 in-store there, seems like a killer deal.

Agreed, the g3220 is a great deal too and a competent chip. The OP's budget ($350.-) allows for a bit better chip. Higher base clock, hyperthreading, better iGPU, and a mobo discount are specific details that support the point.

It makes sense. My opinion is just biased, I don't think a kid's computer with Minecraft as the most demanding app calls for a fast i3. I do like the new i3s, though.

The simple short answer is no. Intel's stock-cooler is very good in fact... :)

It'll certainly get the job done, but I wouldn't go so far as to call it "very good". It does get kind of loud under load.

With $350 for the CPU/mobo/RAM, you could easily afford a GPU if you wanted one.

The G3220 is very cheap at $50, but I think the mobo combo deal that's available when getting the i3 4340 is too good to pass up, especially considering your budget.

i3 4340 $130
GA-H81M-H $15 AR AP
Team DDR3 1600 8GB $61 - could also go with 4GB to keep costs low
Total: $206
