Perhaps the OP can get a 2nd-hand i5 or i7 in the classifieds? Maybe even a Nehalam-based chip. There's an i7 920 combo with motherboard + RAM going for $250 in classifieds right now, which is about what you'd expect to spend in just an i3 or FX + board, and it's without a doubt much faster.

Used is nearly always the best value! I like this idea!

I'm getting a bundle from Micro Center, CPU + board + RAM for under $200. $250 breaks my limit for this build. I think the 6300 will be fine for me.

Its a DX 9 game engine that can barely multithread . This is the only reason why the intel dual core is competitive .

In DX 10 and 11 games which can use the available cpu cores the i3 cant compete.
In online gaming the i3 will fall even further behind

Really???? In Hardware Canucks review, i3 vs FX 6300

Deus Ex: i3 slightly ahead
Dirt 3: within 4%
Skyrim: i3 ahead
Street Fighter IV: only game that FX clearly wins
Torchlight II: equal

Dont know what your definition of "competitive" is, but that looks to me about as competitive as you can get.

Yes, it's on par in games with unlocked 6300 which can be pushed if need be. Also it lacks multitasking capability of FX6300 and is much worse for any video encoding/3D rendering Vs FX6300.

Skyrim is a DX 9 game

And all those results are be best the intel is capable of . The FX can be overclocked a few hundred Mhz and its a one horse race

PD is ~14% faster in games than BD. Go with the better core,3 modules is more than enough.Once you OC it to ~4Ghz on stock vcore you will match or exceed the performance of 8120 in MTed workloads .

Sorry I had nothing to add to this thread above. Droid app decided it was going to post while I was scrolling.

Deus ex and dirt 3 are dx 11 and the two chips are essentially even in those games. Even though it is dx9, skyrim is more popular than either of those. Diablo III, star craft 2, and borderlands 2 are all hugely popular dx 9 games. Are we supposed to not play them because they run better on Intel hardware?
