Since I'm studying I don't have that amount of money :(. He was here a couple of weeks ago and tried playing Q3, and it was so nice to see how he got excited playing. I talked to him about I building a PC to him, but he can't afford it.

It is really bothering me 'cause watching him playing and see the excitement really wants me to give him a PC as his christmas present.

In recent years his life is getting really good. But it took hard on him getting devorsed after 12 years because of his' ¤#"¤#¤ wife cheating behind his back ½ a year or more before the devorse. I never thought that I should see him cry, and it broke my heart.

After spending years on his own he finally found a really nice women which he is living toghether with now, and things are going the right way for him now. But being able to give my dad a PC at christmas would be the greatest gift I could give him.

Damn :(.

I think snow patrol has the best idea. That is probably the best thing to do because it isn't too terribly expensive, requires no maintenance, is easy to use, and won't get you called on the phone every other hour asking how to do something (I know you love him, but it does get a bit irritating :)).

Good luck AoD! :)

Well since I have to use it it's not an option.

<< Buy him a DreamCast and a copy of Quake 3 for that >>

You dont think your Dad made any sacrifices for you over the years?

Anyway, maybe see if you can snag him an N64 or Super Nintendo, something affordable and a few games for that.

How's his credit? Nothing says you've got to have the money up front. Why not get a decent system, for a decent price and pay over time?

I'll assume here that you want the machine for him not because he just likes Q3, but because you think that's a good way to get him started in the PC world? Yes?

Good Luck

he's a student..he NEEDS his comp.

if your dad already has a comp, upgrade his video card and he'll be able to play quake3. if not, a console (ie playstation, dreamcast, etc) would be the next best thing.

Did you see his system specs? Anyone could sell that stuff off and build 2 midrange PC's very easily. He can do whatever he wants, but I know my parents made HUGE sacrifices for me when they were young, and never said word one to me about any of it.

The best gift you can give your dad is to be a good son, a person he is proud to be the father of. If you wanna get him a PC do it, but dont complain about not having enough money to do it, when your system could easily build two.

good point, sluggo...I didn't notice the specs in his sig.

angelofdeath, if you truly want to give your dad a computer, then giving him one of the hard drives and 128 megs of ram wouldn't hurt. if you really need all of those hd space, then burn some mp3s onto a cd and running quake 3 does not require 256 megs of ram, especially when you have a geforce.

<< Asus P3B-F ; P3-700E w/Slot1-FCPGA; 256mb PC133; CL Geforce DDR; SB Live!; Promise ATA66; IBM 20,5gb & Maxtor 20gb; Plextor 8432A; Toshiba M1402 w/H+ >>

Sweet machine...now downgrade! ;) heh, it's your call, but I would personally do the following:

Sell the P3 700 and get two P3 500e's, buy a BX mobo that can overclock stably and supports a cumine yet isn't terribly expensive (Soyo 6BA+III comes to mind), give him a 128MB of that PC133 (assuming it is 2 sticks of 128), get an el cheapo sound card, give him one of those hard drives, a 48x generic CD-ROM, a generic 250w ATX midtower, and a generic HARDWARE modem. The total cost of that shouldn't come to more than $300. Yes, your computer will not be a beast any more, but it will still be quite nice. Oh, and of course get a Gorb and overclock to 667MHz. :)

Or, get him a dreamcast and Quake3 for the DC.

If your dad likes quake3, i'm sure he'd also love unreal tournment, which would run quite well on a very cheap voodoo3. Ever show him counterstrike? That's a cool game too.

I'm going to give my dad my brother's old computer when he finishes upgrading. It'll be a PII350, 128 megs RAM, TNT 16 meg, 3.2gb hard drive, and whatever monitor I can find. It will be cracking for RC5 full time though. ;)

might I suggest PeoplePC. Or Emachine. The machines arent expensive and you can break teh payments down to months. PeoplePC will allow you to pay something like 25 bucks a month for it. Its not much and you can easily cover it.

There are other deals that you can get an good Emachine with a 16MB ATI Rage 128 Card for about 500 without the monitor. Mind you the People PC thing comes with a monitor. If not try Gateway and for their Astro computer, its an all in one sure it doesnt have a very powerful video card and cant be upgraded, but its a stable computer.

there are several options, you dont have to pay at once, you can always split payments over a long time, there are lots of compaines that allow you to pay small amount and pay it off over a year or so.

Also try "IQVC" or "WWW.QVC.COM" or "WWW.ASSEENONTV.COM" --> I think?

don't give him too much praise yet...we'll see if he'll actually part with some of the components of his comp and let his dad have them.

Hey there and tx for the replies.

First of all my only hobby is this computer and since I've saved money like you'll ever imagine to build this baby of mine I don't consider even ruin my own PC for that.

Secondly...If your favorite hobby was the car, the fishing gear etc., would any of you tear that apart or and give it to your mom or dad?.

I love my dad very much and have done that for 27 years, but selling my PC (my dream) is not an option.

I don't hope you think less of me for saying that.

The DC was a good idea but it would be nice for him to be able to use to other than playing. Well still thinking and eventually something will come up...

I hate to admit it, but red's right. I sorta blew my chance when I got my report card a few weeks ago.

Well, you could always go with a system like this from Dell:

1 4100 MiniTower
P3-800mhz
128 RAM
10 gig hd
nVidia geFORCE (32MB)
SB Live
CD 48X
56K DataFax
$719

Put that on a 3 year loan(through dell) for about $20 something a month, and pay it off when you do get the extra $$.

Here's the link to the systems: dell refurb
