First off, you were renting, why no renters insurance? Didn't feel like it was worth it?

Secondly, you need to be more specific, who do you want me to pray to?

Heh, I guess some people aren't as perfect as you Jack.

I don't have renters insurance as well, and it's none of your buisness anyway. So go away because nobody cares what you have to say.

Anyway I feel for your family and hopefully you can get this horrible situation dealt with as soon as possible.

🙁

Horrible. Just horrible.

This is one of my greatest fears, especially now with 2 little ones in the house. I can not imagine what you are going through.

Thoughts prayers and *good vibes* all coming your way.

You have to count your blessings in a spot like this. Your family is safe and that is all that REALLY matters.

Godspeed, and keep us up to date.

Thanks for the support from everyone. It turns out that the owner of the house will get another house that state farm is renting, and it will be furnished. We have been invited to live there until the new house is built. We'll have a roof over or heads, which is the most important thing. It's been four days already, and I still think I'm in shock mode. I still feel numb from this. The girl at the front desk here at the hotel offered some clothes for my wife, and the hotel let me go through their lost and found for some clothes for myself. I'm glad we finally found some clothes to wear!

Sorry to hear it, but very glad to hear everyone is ok. Inconvenience and humility of having lost everything is a small cost compared to how unfortunate some people have been in such cases. Prayers, and hang in there - it still must be quite a challenge.

STFU moron :|

Has anyone had smoke damage to their computer? The hard drive is the only place that there might be a chance of recovering pictures of my daugter I had saved on there. The fire restoration company padlocked the house and won't let me in because of the structural damage. Does smoke affect the components of a computer?

Not directly from smoke. A HDD is closed up well. I'd be more worried about the heat and debris that may have interacted with the computer - they can both be damaging.

Take it out of the case, wipe it off, clean it well with alcohol and try it in another computer.

I would think the HD would be airtight enough to survive, if it wasn't exposed to excessive heat, of course. Clean it up and try it in another computer when you can. At worst, maybe you could send it to a data recovery company when you're back on your feet, it's amazing what they can recover from damaged drives.

Sorry to hear about your situation. I'm very happy no one got hurt.

Have you checked your landlord's insurance? Since you were renting a house, maybe his/her insurance will cover your loss?
