My friend (a big PC gamer) has been helping me out with what I should buy. I took 2 different routes since I'm unsure of which to buy. First, I have a PC I customized on www.cyberpowersystem.com which came to around $1400, and the other route is buying all the parts on New Egg and then assembling it. That was around $1600. I'm looking to go under $1500 though.

Basically I want a nice PC that's not too hi-tech. I want it to handle Far Cry, Half Life 2, Doom 3, etc. I was thinkng 1GB RAM, nVidia GeForce 6800GT, AMD Athlon 64 3500+ 1GHz, DVD Burner (all purpose). I took screenshots of the stuff I'd like to get (please tell me if the pics aren't working):

CYBER POWER: (Ill edit the post when I get to host all the screenshots I took of it, there's like 14 pics I took)

By the way guys, does the motherboard come with a good network card? I have 2 computers right now that are connected to a router. When I get this new comp it'll be in my room upstairs (these 2 comps are in the basement). So I know that I'll need a long Cat5 cable. But how slow will the internet connection be with 3 computers hooked up to a router? Thanks.

Might as well get the 3000+ and OC it to 3500+, or jsut get the 3700+ its more bang for the buck and better OC with the extra cache.

Do not get the 6800GT, might as well wait for the X1800 XT or X1800 Pro.

Also If you can go ahead and get 2GB, although its not absalutly necessary, you would be set for future games.

Way better than the system the OP costomized.
OP, why don't you just paste the list of parts instead of taking screenshots ...

If you want to build it yourself, Newegg. If you want it built for you, Cyberpower. Your choice.

Umm, you learn how to put a computer together and you get to choose how you want everything set up if you build it. And I have never bought from CyberPower, so personally, I would build. But again, its all up to you. :)

From your Newegg list:

Case - That case is pretty nice. Kinda pricey, but pretty nice.
Floppy - Keep it.
Hard Drive - Keep it.
Monitor - Bleh, go with a 17" LCD. You can get one for about $200, and it's much better on your eyes and weighs a lot less.
Motherboard - SLI is a useless waste of money. Get the EPoX 9nPA+ Ultra/MSI Neo4 Platinum (non-SLI)/DFI Lanparty Ultra-D.
Video Card - The 6800GT is pretty overpriced. Get an X800XL, which performs at about the same level, but only costs like $250.
DVD-ROM - Keep it.
Sound Card - Meh, either get just an Audigy 2 ZS, or go for the much better and newer X-Fi series. That ZS Gamer Edition costs too much for an outdated piece of hardware.
Speakers - Since you're getting a good sound card, you might as well get good speakers too. Go with a nice Klipsch set. They're expensive, but they're awesome speakers. If you don't want to spend that much money, the Logitech X-530's are excellent for a budget 5.1 setup.
RAM - Drop the super-expensive performance RAM and go with 2GB of value RAM. That'll perform a lot better than 1GB.
CPU - Get a 3000+ Venice or 3700+ San Diego and overclock it.
OS - You don't need XP Pro. XP Home will be just fine.

That's the second time someone reccommended an LCD, and I dunno if I really want one. Why don't I need XP Pro? Oh, and I'm starting to think that I might as well go with the 7800.

I would strongly suggest getting 2GB RAM, as a good 2GB kit will cost only $20-40 more at most

(get OCZ ValueSelect or the higher up Platinum.........either of them will show you why 2GB with ok timings is WAY BETTER then 1GB with fast timings...... trust me, the 2GB will come in handy more then the better timings)

you could also save a little money on the PSU and get an ePower Tagan 480W (dual rail)...... it has more then enough amps and power to run that set-up, plus its dead silent and reliable

Well, my friend is saying that it'll be much better for me to get high quality RAM than 2 sticks of OK RAM. He said that way, when I upgrade, I can get top-quality RAM.

I'm sticking to buying Windows XP Pro, because the WIndows XP Home that I have on my Dell that I'm using blows. Plus, this PC is going to be up in my room. I AM thinking of getting a cheaper power supply, 'cause I'm working to get this money and it's going to take me much longer to get $2000 than $1500..

LOL your friend doesn't know what he's talking about. It would be better to get 2 1gb value sticks, than 2 512 mb high performance sticks. I WOULD NOT get the 3500+, waste of money IMO. Get a 3000+ or 3200+ and overclock.

Yea, seriously, your friend is a little to caught up in the numbers

Go down to the overclockers forum (i think thats where its at) and theres a stickied topic on how FAST timing RAM DOES ABSOLUTELY NOTHING BETTER then average timing RAM.
The fastest 1GB RAM was paired against the average 1GB (valueselect stuff) RAM in gaming tests, and the most the tester saw was around 1-3fps increase.

Like ive been saying, ITS NOT WORTH IT. 2GB is a much better idea then 1GB (if BF2 is any indication).

Dont listen to your "friend"

The RAM he's telling you to get is $183 for 1GB, 2-2-2-5 timings........

for $15 more ($200), you can get 2GB, 3-3-3-8 timings (the difference between these will only be noticeable in synthetic benchmarks, such as SuperPI, but it will be UNNOTICEABLE in gaming or applications)

and for $50 more ($237 after rebate) you can get 2GB, 2-3-2-5 timings (this would kick the sh!t out of the 1GB, just because its 2Gigabytes of RAM, which comes in handy more then faster timings)
