I would like to thank the internet for music

I remember back in the days when it was so hard to find music because it was almost entirely limited to stores and local radio. It wasn't until internet radio stations on winamp that I really started to find my music tastes, which were far from mainstream in the US midwest. I finally had a chance to open up winamp and load an older playlist the other day. Such a trip down memory lane of an array of music that I love. And the ease of distribution via Youtube, Soundcloud etc today means I can keep finding smaller artists or those located on a different continent to listen to. Artists I never would have heard if things were still limited to radio and stores.

winamp still supports shoutcast radio. There is a lot to choose from.

So true. The first time you listen to ABBA is really a life-changing moment.

Agree. In my day you got to hear almost nothing, and had to save up your pennies to buy one vinyl lp every now-and-then (only to find that the single that you had heard on the radio was in fact the only decent track on it). It was almost impossible to sample a range of different music of different genres or cultures, you had to be very selective because you were limited by what you could afford to buy on overpriced vinyl (or even more overpriced cds - God those things were a ripoff when they first appeared)

But there is almost too much, these days. Time becomes the limiting factor instead of money. (And, ironically, at this point in life, time is an increasingly scarce resource, in all senses)

I remember when I first found the Beatles in 2015. Wow, such an amazing band, they will do great things.

Whut? We are just waiting for McCartney, Star and Best to die then there would be no surviving Beatles members.

I should dust off the wax cylinders.

Yea, the internet's great for that; almost too much though. There's so much, it's hard to focus.

I'd rather have that than the alternative

I didn't realize it was actually back in distribution - I had archived my 5.66 installer when it was announced it was going to be shutdown. I don't think I'll pick back up the radio option though - I have enough to keep up with between Soundcloud and Youtube 😉

Yes, music publications have become somewhat less relevant since it's so easy to listen to an album for yourself before adding it to one's collection.
Browsing by tags in BandCamp can help you find stuff too.

I never used Internet radio stations, but the Internet in general definitely helped me find new music. My cousin introduced me to a lot of the music I guess, as he was getting into punk music a bit before I did. From there it was just finding bands that were listed/associated with ones I already knew and listened to, as well as reading Punk News.org and finding a band that way.

But that was all back in the day. I don't listen to music too much any more and don't care about finding any new music. I'm pretty content with the stuff I already have and as I said, just don't listen to a lot anymoar.

It's kinda funny, because that's more or less how I am about movies & TV shows.
Not music though, ever looking for new things to listen to, and I start to feel disgruntled if I've gone too long without learning to play another song.

Metallica would disagree.

I wouldn't, but Metallica would.

Shit I remember having a boombox with a fresh cassette inserted, tuned to my favorite radio station, tape deck on record-pause, waiting for my favorite songs to come on to make a mix tape lol Hated it when a good one came on and the damned DJ would talk through the entire intro.
