Thanks, Jackass.

I'm pretty sure my car's stability assistance saved my ass tonight. I was driving around 50mph behind a line of cars and the deer appeared out of nowhere. I swerved to the left and clipped it on it's hindquarters with my front passenger side and saw it flip wildly over my car. After I hit it I swerved back to the right and fishtailed pretty violently until I came to a stop.

Had I not had stability assistance, I would have definitely lost control of the car and slammed into a tree or, even worse, this was next to a golf course with a large lake. Just thinking about what could have happened is pretty troubling.

It's hard to tell because it's dark out, but it looks like my headlight, bumper, grill and front passenger quarter panel will need work or replacement. Robble robble.

So, again, thanks, you bastard.

Update: Looking over insurance documents, looks like I'll be able to get this fixed without any deductable, so that's cool. Hope the insurance doesn't go up, though.

Well, I can take pics in the morning. Do you really want to see pics of some front-end damage on a car? Haha.

Nah, I can swim. I was implying it would really suck to go into a lake in 40 degree weather.

Thats what you get for swerving. Anything smaller than an elephant ram full on(excepting humans). If you swerved to avoid a deer and ended up in a lake, I think you would have rather hit the deer no?

My dad's car is in the shop now getting work done on the front of it - deer impact. I think he's hit........I don't know, 5 deer in the past few years? One was just grand too: It barreled down a hill and smacked into the rear passenger-side door.
Nice bonus: Insurance covers the deductible for deer impacts, at least in PA. Too bad we don't get to keep the deer, otherwise we'd have enough meat to last us a long, long time. (I think it's illegal to keep roadkilled deer, otherwise people would probably just go hunting deer using their cars. Don't quote me on any of that though, I'm not sure of it.)

Project for genetic engineers: Somehow edit the genes of deer so that they learn to fear long, black/gray rocks with big noisy things zipping along them.
I don't know what the hell it is with them in night when they see some glowing orbs moving toward them.
"Hmm, bright glowing things. I bet I'll be safer if I run across this big flat rock right before the glowing things get here. God I'm so darned smart."

A deer can cause pretty substantial damage. Of the deer my dad's hit, I think he's had at least 2 cars totaled as a result.
My mom also hit a deer at around 45mph. It didn't total the car, but it was close. There was extensive damage to the front end, but she really liked the car and didn't want to get a different one.

That sounds like a brilliant suggestion!

hitting a mature adult deer straight-on, can kill you. Forget the deer, the fact that your car can be totaled and the crumpling and almost immediate stoppage could lead to death.
Best to try and avoid hitting large animals head on.

There was absolutely no time to think in this situation. Your immediate instinct is to attempt to avoid the animal. I know swerving is a bad idea. I didn't have time to think "Hmm, I'm about to hit that deer that is 10 feet in front of my car and I'm going 50mph. I'd swerve, but that's definitely not an elephant, so I'm gonna plow right into it and hope it doesn't crash through my windshield right into my lap."
