I won't be giving another penny to the salvation army.

Each Christmas I give around $100 to the salvation army, today I found out they are a religious charity. I now feel retarded for giving them all of that money. I will need to check all of the other charities I give too, to make sure non of them have any religious affiliation.

Yep, because all the good they do for people is tainted by "religion".

And I'm trying to think of a way to say you're stupid for not recognizing that fact without being mean, but I can't.

So, now you're less stupid.

I'm not religious at all but I still give to religious charities and religious food banks and such. Sure I think people who believe in a guy floating in the sky who kills innocent people is dumb but I'll give cans and money to my local church because I know how it is to be on hard times and now that I have the ability to help others, I do it.

What did you think the "salvation" bit in the name was for? Are you also aware that it isn't a real army?

If you really object to their being a religious charity, just find a different worthy charity that is not religious. Shrug.

The name is the Salvation army. When is the word Salvation used in a context not religious especially in a charity?

There are plenty of secular charities to donate to if you want

Do you think for a second they only help those who are religious? Or do they help any and all they can? They aren't discriminating, so why are you?

What a partisan tool.

I think this is more of a failure on your part than on yours. It's not like they hide it.

Anyways, they're effective at what they do. They do quite a bit of good with the money that they receive. You may not agree with what they believe, but you'll have a hard time finding fault with the good that they do.

and you guys are delusional if their wackjob views don't affect who they decide to help

Here's something you probably can't wrap your head around. Some people just help people because that's their mission in life - to help others regardless of views or persuasion. You'll find that's how most religious charities operate. If you were part of one you'd understand how they operate.

How does their feelings about pornography affect feeding the homeless and helping them find jobs?

did you notice the word "and" in my post? the porn quote was just to help the common ATOT folk relate to the organization. the second line in my post was quite unrelated

you think they actively look into helping muslim or jewish homeless? maybe to try and convert them. here is what they say under their views on religious persecution

Religious Persecution
Religious persecution, whether of Christians or persons of other faiths, is an injustice against humanity. The Salvation Army is adamantly opposed to the religious persecution of any individual, community, organization or institution.
The persecution of Christians around the world is a grave concern. Salvationists have a particular scriptural responsibility to those who make up the worldwide Body of Christ.1 The Salvation Army is committed to praying for and upholding our brothers and sisters in Christ who suffer religious persecution.
Religious persecution of Christians may take the form of denial of the right to worship together in congregate bodies, to speak openly about Christ, to own or carry a Bible, to witness to others, or to raise children in the Christian faith. In other instances, people are denied the freedom to convert to Christianity. In some countries our brothers and sisters are subjected to political suppression and social discrimination, incarceration, torture or murder for their belief.
Salvationists are encouraged to pray for all those who suffer persecution on the basis of their faith.

Approved for use within the USA by International Headquarters

hmm, something seems to be missing. oh, OTHER religions

The fact that I can find no mention of a Salvation Air Force means they are likely highly vulnerable to air attack, so its probably a waste of money anyway.

I am pretty vocal about my distaste for religion, somewhat regarding the whole faith part, but most specifically about the concept of organized religion itself.

However, it's hard to ignore the good the basic concept still does. Religious charities sometimes do a lot of good, and yes some are junk - you just have to do research.
Some of the best approaches to helping others are founded in religious circles - be they actually sponsored by a religious organization, or simply faith-minded people helping others without sponsorship of some religious organization.

And that's ignoring the great help the basic concept of God and Faith gives to some people. It depresses me, but there are quite a few who would basically be disabled without faith or that sense of belonging to a religious circle. It's another self-help tool, though few probably approach it that way. If someone turns religious because of help, they rarely sought it because they knew it would help fix them, but it was where they went and it ultimately helped them.
[/ramble]

Short but sweet - religion and faith are terrible and slowing us down, but it still helps many people find the support they need to get through life.

[back to rambling]
Other people, like me, acknowledge all of this, but refuse to drop the stubbornness and would rather fight Life and oneself day after day. Gives you an entirely different perspective on life by going this route though, but I wouldn't change a thing - I wouldn't be who I am if I didn't face myself on my own the way I have.

edit:
Oh, and OP, did you never connect the dots as to what the word "Salvation" alludes?
