It all gets mixed up in the same place.

Although there is a rule about you can pour acid on water but not water on acid or something like that.

I know, I didn't quote the whole thing. Beer before liquor, never been sicker. Liquor before beer, have no fear.

I always heard it the other way around, but whe I go out drinking, it's shots first... beers second.

its all a myth. it just deals with the impurities in the alcohol...doesnt matter what order you drink in..

In a Brooklyn accent: Add water to acid and you're gonna get blasted. Do what you oughta, add acid to wata.

The idea of the saying is that if you have beer before liquor, by the time you get to the liquor you will have had enough that you may misjudge how much liquor you should consume.

First of all, it doesn't matter at all which you drink first.

Second, I always heard "Whiskey on beer, have no fear, beer on whiskey, mighty risky".

Basically, you could always drink something stronger, but don't switch to something weaker. Either way, it's all B.S.

Well I had beer, liquor, beer, more liquor.

As long as I take some alka-seltzer before bed I'm fine.

Not true. The rule is based on the absorption rate of beer compared to hard liquor. Basically, beer digests slower and gets to your blood slower, hard liquor is faster. So if you fill up on beer, then down shots, your body has much more work to do...result is more likely to vomit, and have severe hangover.

Do the shots to get a good buzz, and keep it going with some beers.

This is a rule of thumb, and is subjective to your personal tolerance for alcohol. Some people won't have these problems, others will.

(alliteratively) Always Add Acid!

That one makes sense, though, because if you add water, the water floats on top and the diffusing layer between them gets really hot and can shatter your test tube.

Total BS

After 4 years of college I've pretty much given up on hard liquor unless its a group shot at a bar or something

Beer ftw

this has always been my reasoning as well; you're going to be a much poorer judge of how much to consume and mix stronger drinks/take more shots while inebriated than the other way around...

Along these lines, it's comes from people that don't know how to drink that start with a few beers, then switch to mixed drinks but keep drinking them at the same pace they were drinking the beer. Drinking mixed drinks with their higher alcohol concentration at the rate they drink beer causes them to drink more than they should.
