I wonder what would happen if I did this?

I discovered that I could change the screen resolution to a value well above the capabilities of the video card.

For two days it ran fine at 1280 x 1024, which is above the 800 x 600 maximum.

It just died! :(

What card was it?

Btw I 'overclock' my CRT monitor!:Q ,my Hansol 900P max rating is 1600x1200 @70Hz ,trouble is I'm very sensitive to flashing/strobing on lights/screens & I can see 70Hz flicker ,so using Powerstrip I've o/ced it to 75Hz ;) ,no more flickering :).Btw that res is only for games ,desktop res is much lower. So far no probs.....

It was an old ATI based Diamond that I used as a temp whenever another card had to be RMA-ed. It had 16MB of ram!!!

Under Windows XP, it would scroll soooooo slowly! Under Linux (and the resolution hike) it was pretty zippy. I thought I had found a way to get superior performance out of a $50 card.

I ordered a replacement from Newegg that I should get later this week. I moved up. This is a $100 card.

I don't play games, so I don't need much. However, one box has an ATI x1900 AIW which is nice.

I think my box is still crunching Sudoku, every once in a while the disk light blinks. And, I can still reach the data over the LAN.

Heck, Newegg has some Nvidia 6800gt 256MB cards for $50 these days!
I paid $100 for my AGP X1650 512MB - nice card btw!

How much wu does it crunch???? ;) :p
Is it any good for Folding??? j/k
lol;)

I did that once, years ago. I fried the CRT.

The weirdest thing about it was that it happened on the same day that SETI found a suspected alien signal!

How far over max was the refresh rate?

I was pushing to reach 50% over max, when it suddenly produced a terrific light show-- a kaleidoscope of colors dancing around the screen. It lasted for a few minutes, long enough to get some of the other programmers into my cubicle to watch it.

Then the screen went black and my cubicle filled with black, acrid smoke. It was a well spent $550.

You mean flickering/strobing? no none ,even though they are only at 60Hz:confused: ,I'm assuming (maybe vaguely remembering?) that the whole screen is refreshed at once on an LDC rather than being drawn from top to bottom(CRT)???

When I got my first LCD I was sooooo pissed that it had to use 60Hz refresh....
Then I realized it didn't seem to be visable (ignorance can be an embarrassing thing) I think you must be right. I remember that someone wrote since the backlight doesn't change and only the crystals do, that is why flicker doesn't seem to be present.

So have you got one picked out for when that puppy of yours explodes?

Makes sense what you say ,I should read up about it;)

No I don't have one picked out ,I'm not couting on it blowing up soon ;) ,it's only in games the refresh rate is o/ced (for 1600x1200) ,my desktop is set to 1152x864 & the refresh is in spec their.
I'm hoping it'll last long enough to the point where OLED screens are common place & much cheaper;)
