on my DSL connection, instead of using the one from my ISP (Bellsouth) that are assigned automatically.

None, if the DNS servers your ISP provides are properly set up and maintained.
On the other hand, if they are having sporadic problems and outages of DNS, then I'd move to some more reliable ones.

I've had it happen a couple of times with my ISP, but they have not skipped a beat lately.

The reason that I'm asking is becasue I have too many disconnect/delay/page can't be display/dns errors lately, I would said from early December. I bought a new Firewall, thinking that it was the reason for the connectivity issue, now I have an extra firewall, because I still have problems. Called BS, gave me a new modem (WESTELL 2100) rewired my DSL connection, closer to my PC and where my LAN router is located as well, still same issue. Today another BS tech.came over swapped some wires on the box outside, and requested the port to be changed on the CO. So far, I got a couple of errors, so I was wondering if I assign the DNS manually will improved the connectivity.

PS i got the same errors when I replied, I almost lost the reply, Glad that I was able to go back to copy and paste. :(

well it's most likely not DNS causing you the problem then and more likely a problem with your DSL.

your machine will cache DNS requests so that it isn't doing DNS resolution everytime you click on a page.

you could always try another DNS server without any home networking gear in the way to be sure.

Spidey, I did that already, I connected my PC direct to the modem and did not see any difference, to be honest, so I don't know what else to do, or what else BS can do. The test line come good, great numbers, no noise on the line, now I'm connected direct to the box outside, there are no filters on my home (don't need them) and they already replace the DSLAM card on the CO. Today they were to change the port, so will see what happens.

I thought that it would be better to change the DNS servers on the modem directly, instead of each PC on my LAN. Of course, I might be wrong

I have seen enough problems with that particular server that I actually recognize it's IP address. :p
