Ok sorry for the sensational "look at me Enquirer" title but it was to grab your attention. Anyhow this afternoon my friend and I were on our way to Long Island Pizzaria for lunch before seeing The Anniversary Party at the new Fox Tower's Regal Cinemas theatre. We were walking along 6th & Morrison in downtown Portland, Oregon near the Max tracks when I saw some commotion going on in the middle of the frickin' street (this is the bus mall where all the buses come into downtown). I see Rite Aid employee walk swiftly and approach a young teenager boy her hand going for his bag of groceries, instead of grabbing him, kicking him, doing a Matrix-Shrek like kick she did nothing like that, so he RAN! Boy did that boy run, I was compelled for half a second to run after the turd but I remember when I was a little runt and stole $1.20 of candy from Newberry's (got caught and outran the undercover security guy), ironically I had like $2 enough to pay for the stuff. Since that scared the crap out of me I never stole after that. Anyhow I just felt compelled to come online and tell over 61,400 strangers what happened this afternoon.

Yes you guys mean that much to me!

Have you ever witnessed a robbery or shoplifting?

That's small shop lifting. Kind of like little kids going to where the Candy Bins are and sticking their hands in there and having a free taste test :)

The shoplifter didn't appear to be homeless or anything so it's really stupid that he stole anything. I'm sure he could have paid for whatever he stole.

Awwwww, that's sweet. :)

I've never witnessed a robbery, but I witnessed a police chase one time. I'm at this gas station on the corner in downtown Miami. All of a sudden, this van rolls up and 5 guys get out. They all start running and then 4 cop cars pull up. I'm stunned. I have no idea what to do, but I keep pumping my gas. All the cops get out and chase after them. (2 per squad car.) In the back of one of the squad cars is a guy who they already arrested. His window is cracked and he's not handcuffed. He manages to get his the door open from the outside and one of the cops sees him. She draws her gun and tells him to lay down. The guy knows she's not going to shoot him in a crowded gas station, so he takes off running. She goes after him as well as a couple of other cops. Needless to say they were all aprehended and my tank was full.

I managed a music store before, and this 20 year old walked out with a bunch of CD's under his jacket. I chased the guy through the mall dodging people, jumping railings etc. until we ended up on the street out front..I pushed the guy's face into the concrete, and let him go...5 min. later I had a date w/ a woman who watched this all happen. We spent that night drinking super sized Mai Tai's, and listening to Don HO at the Hawaiin Village Restaurant.

The End.

Makes you wonder why the cop even draws their gun? I thought they can only fire if it's a life threatening situation? What if the cop and robber were in the middle of no where would she have shot? I suppose she could have aimed for his leg or something.

Only problem is, cops are trained to shoot to kill.

ahhh, the joys of the Portland Metro Area.

I'm sure that stastically Portland is pretty safe compared to other metro areas except for car theft, I have we still have a big problem in that area.

Makes me think twice about getting a Honda Accord, come on how often is someone gonna steal a Hyundai Sonata?

:p

I deleted this post, because there are some crazy people here.

Strange world we live in.

That sucks sorry to hear about that, people will be ... well people!

Dude, I worked for JJ Newberry. I have my eyes on you.

Ooh I'm scared considering where the Newberry's location was has since then been demolished and replaced with an Albertson's (who has good prices - no need to steal). But you just keep your eye on me :)

You may be surprised to know that many cops aren't "gun people" at all, and only shoot their firearm enough to re-qualify with it each year. I imagine there was good reason she didn't shoot for a leg, cause she couldn't have probably hit it.

Back when I was in high school, it became the "cool" thing to have this one kid shoplift stuff for you, and then you give him some cash for it. The most popular items were tobacco, but it got to the point where he had lists of stuff people wanted him to get. $5 got you a CD, $50 got you the newest sony discman model. He'd steal anything that wasnt secured (and some stuff that was). He carried a razor blade, with which he cut open boxes. Once, at the store, he cut himself badly with it, so he went to the pharamacy, shoplifted some bandages, and bandaged himself in the store. An accquaintence of mine at the time would drive him to the stores, cause the kid didn't have a car. They got caught several times, never got in trouble for it. He managed to grab a PSX once in Sears. They had a stack of them sitting near the mall enterance, so he grabbed one, stuffed it up the back of his jacket and ran. He continued to steal stuff until he turned 18. Sometime before that, he made enough money to buy one of the earliest portable minidisc recorders that came out.

I saw a thing on Dateline or 48hrs or a similar show, where they arrested a woman for shoplifting. She had taken TONS of stuff, large items too, like garage door lifts and large power tools. I guess DeWalt power drills are popular too. I've had store employees tell me that before they kept them secured in the storage room, people would take 5-6 at a time from the store.

Once I was browsing the DVDs at Wal-Mart and saw someone slip the shrinkwrap off a DVD and slip the disc into a pocket. This guy must have been a pro because he did it in about 5 second and there was no noise. I caught this in the corner of my eye and pretended I didn't see it. Man I hate people like this...they are what raise the price of DVDs! Then I walked up to the clerk (wow she was a cutie) as if nothing happened and whispered that this guy just stole a DVD, so she got on her phone and within like 30 seconds these two regular looking guys walked up (undercover security) and escorted the man to the one corner and asked to empty his pockets. Inside was at least a dozen DVDs (discs only) I figure.

I felt pretty good after that :D Oh yeah, and the manager of the entertainment area thanked me and gave me a $20 GC.

Dang you earned points with the cute girl, stopped a shoplifter without lifting a finger AND got a free $20 GC. Pretty cool.

He was just taking the discs themselves, not the cases too.

WalMart has lots of those plainclothes security people. When my buddies and I would go check out the paintball stuff, we'd almost always here them call one back to the sporting goods over the PA. (it was never obvious, but we'd always here them ask for something in sporting goods when we were back there, I've never seen it repeated recently) We never took anything, but the guy I was talking about in my other post did all the time, so that was probably the reason. (I had heard from a good friend who worked there that WalMart was noticing the thefts, and they were ready to do what they had to to stop it).

i imagine EBay has become a shoplifter's haven. It's easy to sell anonymously on there, and stuff almost always goes for more then its worth (once you factor in the insane shipping rates). Yet another reason I've stopped using it

Edit: In my experience, the only attractive girls at walmarthave always been jailbait. The ones I could legally date are usually a bit scary.

Soooo did you get your pizza???

No actually I opted for a nice calzone, even if I did get my pizza you'd ask if I sold the other half to my sister.

Admit it!

Saw a guy steal a radar detector from a truck in the parking lot of a restaurant where I used to work. I got half of his license plate number, the other half was taped over and a pretty good description of the thief. Gave it to the police when they came to make a report. Turns out the people that had the radar detector stolen were the parents of some semi-famous country music star (this was in Nashville). At the time I knew who he (the singer) I can't remember.
