hi everyone.

my girlfriend has a gigabyte laptop and she wishes to disable the touchpad's scrolling option (scrolling up and down and sideways by sliding the outer rim of the touchpad). it's driving her nuts.
we both tried googling this issue to death but all we found are advises on going to control panel->mouse->advanced settings and un-tick the scroll option, however there is no "advanced settings" tab under "mouse" in control panel.
there are the following tabs:
buttons, pointers, pointer options, wheel, hardware.

it kinda seems like the device windows recognizes is a mouse called PS/2 compatible mouse.
i dont know why. there is no mouse connected to the laptop. even in "device manager" it shows this mouse connected but no other pointer device.

the OS is win7 64 bit
lap top is gigabyte (model W566U).

i will appreciate any advice or links.
thanks, guys.

I haven't seed touchpad that does scroll without drivers from touchpad maker. Those drivers then add configuration option in mouse settings... in my case it is Device Settings tab

wait, are you saying that the the touchpad doesnt even supposed to scroll without a driver?
but it does.

regardless, how can i tell what drivers i need and where to DL them from?
as said - its a gigabyle laptop, so should i assume it's a gigabyte driver?
is there some generic driver i can use that is the most basic one that has high chances to fit this particular touchpad and give me the required option?

Start > Settings > Control Panel > Mouse > Device Settings Tab > Settings > Virtual Scroll isn't there?

Most of the time a app controlls the touchpad. I wouldn't see why your lappy would be the exception. Move the cursor over the apps by the clock and read the popups to find it. If not down there expand it to show all apps in the notification bar and you will. If not then ???

There are two major touchpad manufacturers: alps and synaptics. Synaptics has generic drivers with software on their page.
Unless you have reinstalled windows on your own, it is 99% likely that gigabyte has installed driver & software already.

my g\f HAS installed win7 on her own just a coupe of days ago.
she, managed to solve this scrolling annoyance on her own a few years ago on win XP but now, after installing win7, the issue has returned and now we dont remember how it was solved on XP nor can we solve it on win7 via "mouse -> device settings" (since this tab doesnt exist).

what do you suggest we try and do?

Install touchpad drivers and then try to disable the scroll function.

Maybe windows update > Check for optional updates and see if anything touchpad related either gonna be synaptics or alps. Other than that you'll need to search for them. Gigabytes page only shows drivers for XP and Vista 32bit. Guess the lappy is kinda old but should be functional.

The best solution is to totally disable the touchpad and install a mouse with a nano T/R unit.

I'm guessing Windows 7 has a driver thats compatible with your touchpad, and Windows will keep loading it.. As Kenmitch says, try installing actual OEM drivers and disable the scrolling if that driver supports it.

pardon my ignorance, but what is OEM drivers? is that specific drivers for her touchpad?

OEM is Original Equipment Manufacturer, in this case Gigabyte. They would provide drivers for your model. The website only lists drivers for XP and Vista though. I looked up your model and it uses Synaptics Touchpad, you can get the latest drivers from the Synaptics website here.
