I think it should be a popular vote. The electoral college has already been warped from its original intention and basically represents a popular vote that can be gamed. A true popular vote would be more honest.
that's my point. it's an outdated system that is easily corrupted.

It's as if I didn't post.

nah, i read you, but you seem to go against the whole premise. if it was just a popular vote, no-one would be worrying about electoral votes, delegates or any of that crap- it'd be a true election.

It would make running for president a hell of a lot more expensive, especially launching a campaign. Say hello to President Romney.

Before asking for the dissolution of the electoral college, you need to do some reading as to why it was created in the first place AND brush up on your understanding of the relationship between the federal government and state governments.

just makes me sad. in this day and age, why can't a populist vote be recorded?

If that were the case there'd be no point in having Montana. LA, NY and Chicago would rule the day. Full states wouldn't matter. Secessionism would run rampant. If 10-12 cities in a half dozen states decided the president, election after election, why would Alaska, Hawaii, Montana, Utah, etc want to participate anymore? Where is their influence?
It's actually a little better than that. Around half the population (153 million) is located in 25 MSAs spanning roughly 16 or so states. You hit 200 million after Boston-Quincy, MA (the 46th largest MSA).

In any case, we have the electoral college because our basic form of government is a republic, not a democracy. It's for similar reasons that we have two senators from each state instead of a population based number like representatives.
