Actually, lots of food companies have arrangements like this. Soda is routinely stocked by Coke/Pepsi. Beer is often stocked by Bud/Coors. Snacks are stocked by Frito Lay.

In many instances the grocery store and food company have an arrangement similar to a rental agreement where Coke/Pepsi rents the shelf space from the store for a fixed amount and then Coke/Pepsi is responsible for all aspects including merchandising, pricing, etc.

 They also pay more for eye level shelving

That seems like an odd arrangement. Do you know any details about it?

I guess Coca Cola and Pepsi care about their image presented in the soda aisle so they manage it themselves?

Don't know all the details really, just know that some vendors have their own employees stock/order/arrange shelves/displays instead of store employees.

From what I remember, a few beer companies, coke/pepsi/7up, frito lays, and a few specialty and ethnic food vendors all did they all stuff and had their own areas for their product in the back of the warehouse.

Yeah, not only do brand-name soft drink and chip distributors manage their in-store stocking/displays but also Nabisco, Little Debbie, and Krispy Kreme. They require no help from store employees. And yes, they do have a pallet in the stockroom reserved for their overstock.

I used to stock foods at WalMart.

Most vendors work off of commission, unlike store employees. You typically find high volume products are stocked by vendors as the expense of shipping to supply warehouses and then to stores would be rather large, given said volume.

As to the OP, I would guess that the Coke vendor built the display and that the boxes weren't empty. Those boxes, minus soda, are extremely light and there is no way they would stay up. If you look closely you can see some of the boxes are sideways, so I bet the backside of the display is fairly deep. That said, I doubt it is stable at that height, even if it is pressed against the back wall for additional stability.

Are stock people responsible for this or is Coca Cola?

I know that I've seen Coca Cola employees (not grocery store employees) take inventory and restock the Coca Cola part of the soda aisle.

The Coke guys would have built that display, not the store employees.

I work for a supermarket currently (Publix in Florida) and work stock, Pepsi and Coke are responsible for those types of displays.

Because Pepsi and Coke (Frito Lay and a variety of other companies) don't sell to us like other manufactures and deliver their products themselves, they have vendors that come in and work their products to the shelves, maintain quality, and appearance. Most companies have people who rotate through the stores monthly or quarterly to check on their products but Frito Lay, Coke, Pepsi, bread companies, and certain frozen products have a vendor that comes in 5-6 days a week to check on their products.

Our stock clerks are responsible to refill the product from what we vendors have left over after deliveries or before they come in, if there is a sale going on and we run low. I think its set up that way for the companies to make more money and ensure we don't shortcut them, as we have our own brand as well.

And all those displays are built by those companies, as well as torn down. I think we are given choices by the vendors and what we decide on they come in and build. We've done Easter, NFL, our company logo, and Halloween displays at my store.
