And there's the rub...if you want free, you get what they give you. If you want to spend money, you get options.

Nothing has changed in the last decade.

Unfortunately, with many companies (MS included), they push their own solutions for their offerings, especially their free offerings. For example, you can logon to Messenger with an AOL or Yahoo email address, and that's all OK...as long as you are using Messenger, they're fine with that. But if you want to use an unrelated feature, such as email, you have to use what they offer for integration with THEIR client.

It ain't so bad. It just ain't what you want. But imagine BillG throwing up just a little bit in his mouth when you want to check your AOL email from directly within one of his products...
