I wish I was a kid again.

There are all these things I was taught as a kid that made plain sense to me then. Unfortunately I grew up and found out that even though grown ups teach their kids these things, the grown ups don't live by them.

Things are so real to kids and they take them so much to heart. These same things are all too often just concepts to grown ups, or they have excuse for why the rules don't apply to them. Wouldn't it be nice if adults lived by their own rules? How different the political arena would look. Heck, how different P&N would look!

- Eat the crusts on your PB&J; there are kids in the world who are starving.
- Don't use bad words.
- Wait your turn to talk. Listen to what the person who is talking has to say. You might learn something.
- If you can't say something nice...
- Don't lie. You always just get yourself in a mess if you do.
- If you make a mistake, fess up to it, apologize, and try not to do it again.
- Say the Pledge of Allegiance every morning and then we'll go over what it means.
- Be home on time.
- Go to sleep or you won't do well in school tomorrow.
- If you make a promise, keep it.
- Think before you speak or act.
- If you don't know, look it up.
- Don't make fun of people who are different from you. They might make really good friends.
- It's okay for everybody to have their own opinion. That's one of the things that makes America a great country.

It seems like all of those disappeared in the grown up world, especially the last one. All I see in P&N is people furious at other people for having a differing opinion and usually insulting their intelligence, education, or parentage because of it.

Yup...but was there ever a time when "adults" were entitled to their own opinions without comming under scrutiny or criticism??

people cannot fathom that others would have differing opinons and get infuriated when people disagree with their ideals/beliefs...I myself fall victim to this often...suck but such is life.

We grew up. It was the end of the innocence. We elected an actor as President of the United States and leader of the Free World. Image became everything, substance became nothing. Then the really bad men used MBAs to sell us and sell us out, and we became like children whose parents use food stamps to buy cigarettes and beer.

I dunno, I think bozack's probably more right. There's never been an age of innocence for adults - there's always been the gap between childhood teachings and idealism and adult reality. Wouldn't it be so much better if the people we were taught to be as children could be real people existing in the real world though?

if you became a kid again, you would already be burdened with so much responsibility. besides the collapse of social security, you'll be looking to pay off $15 trillion of irresponsible government debt

$20 trillion?

$40 trillion?

time will tell

Wow, that was such a stretch to fit that in this thread - I'm impressed! Would that I were so limber...

Not that many years ago, you could say absolutely anything and not worry about being dragged into court. How many millions of times was the phrase "I'm gonna kill yo asx" used in spirited conversation without anyone making more of it than was meant? PC sux, I tell you!

Balony. if you fdon't lie, you'll never get your first good paying job.

what I realizzed in college. Those that lie (also known as fibs) get jobs easily. Those that tel lthe truth get the d1ck in the ass.

Thanks for the reminder Those are the values I teach my kids but I don't live up to them myself oftentimes.

No wonder you hate your job. You know you didn't earn it. I never lied on a resume or in an interview and I have a great job. Glad to see you advocating lying, speaks volumes about your credibility.

You forgot a very important one Hot:

-Mind Your Own Business

With the Religious Radical Right invading into "Adult" bedrooms and taking control over women's bodies, that rule has gone out the window as well.

Condor,

The topic at hand has little to do with what you are referring to, while I agree wholeheartedly with your sentiment I must point out that you are going off topic.

It all boils down to the difference between those adults who can still manage to believe in Santa Claus and the dour old sourpusses who not only can't do so but are infuriated by those who dare to.

Lose one's imagination and the ability to dream and one's life becomes a waste.

People have less constraints on themself on an internet forum, this means that they actually know how to behave but feel badass when they behave like naughty children.
