People do though. I have a buddy who collects unemployment in the winter. I guess he makes about $275 a week. Not a lot of money but if you work under the table a few hours a week you could bring that up to about $300 a week. He sleeps late and watches movies at night. He likes to do his James Bond marathon specials. All night James Bond.

I went to his house. It was pitch dark and we were watching movies.

He's watching James Bond movies over and over because he will never be one. Don't be that guy.

I would wake up at 1pm every day and just play video games on my PC, smartphone, and PS4. I'd then pop in the blue ray and watch 5 hours of movies while sipping on top shelf whiskey.

But alas I am not privileged :(

Seriously, I have buddies who work in the summer and collect unemployment all throughout the fall, winter and spring. Basically they work 5 months and collect unemployment for 7 months.

What a life.

My dad lays fiber for half a year and gets the winter of. Trust me, it sucks because he has to manage his money better and unemployment doesn't give an extension anymore so if he doesn't get back to work by April or May he's fucked.

imagine living with a person who does this

you wake up every morning have to go to your work, perform well enough day in day out. while they never have to deal with any of this.

and then top it off they wait until you are home from your job to do their shopping so you have to stop what you are doing during what little free time you have to help them bring in their shit

"or else i have to take multiple trips to carry it all in" they say

well... congratulations, you have all day to do it

You can do all that stuff, and more, if you just get a job with the government. If you can't beat them, join them!

You won't ever get fired. Plus there are always opportunities to pocket extra money that no one ever notices is missing!

A lot of seasonal construction workers do this. They also find someone who will pay them cash during the winter months for indoor contracting work, while still collecting the poggy.

How does that even work? I know it varies by state but the only time I ever tried to file for unemployment I hadn't worked enough hours in the last five quarters to qualify.

it's "teat"

Normally I'm not a spelling/grammar Nazi, but this concerns a topic I truly love.

that kind of sounds like my average work day. except i have to tab over every once in a while and actually do work. either that or i crunch all my work into 1 or 2 days and just fiddle the rest of the week.

I just returned to work from 9.5 weeks on disability. Trust me, it gets boring.

Maybe if you're hurt but I was out of work for 5 months (getting a full salary) and loved every minutes. Wasn't ever bored.

I live in a resort area. Most of the jobs that are here are summer jobs. For instance, my buddy who collects unemployment works at a hotel. They close in mid-October and reopen in May. When closed he collects unemployment. He's supposed to be looking for work, but he never does. Everybody knows there isn't much out there. People do this their whole life. Its very easy to fall into this trap.

I'm guessing the OP doesn't actually know specifics of the situation. His friends probably brag about that, but there's a ton of things I can think of that could enable that. They're on furlough, are making enough money when they do work that they're able to keep living normal (or might be able to compensate with some benefits), are racking up tons of debt, have other jobs he doesn't know about (just because they say they don't work, doesn't mean they don't) or are being carried by other people (family). Or maybe they're disabled, have other benefits, could be scamming for them, maybe they deal drugs.

There's a shitload of people that live like that, and unless they have a rich family that carries them, invariably they are poor as fuck but they like to pretend they aren't.

Can I leave a wake-up call for 2pm here? My smartphone doesn't always wake me up and I need to get in some rounds of CoD on my Xbox One before my wife gets home from her government job. Plus, I really should be up before the kids get home for once.

Maybe so. I was getting 100% pay for 8.5 of those 9.5 weeks, then 75% for the last week. I was nice going to the cottage during the week though.

Do you think someone who spells "paid" as "payed" has any appreciable amount of money?

I guess you can't win the lotto in this country? I see a lot of people with bad grammar and misspellings, but why am I picked on for one damn word? Seriously????
