As a I'm webhost server admin, I'd like to know what control panel you'd prefer over cpanel?

We use an in-house developed one, but are looking to replace it with an off-the-shelf software... so I guess I'm looking for opinions.

you would have to talk to a server admin on this one.. such as devioustrap... or others... for that kind of opinion.

But in the point of view as a Reseller, cpanel has a lot of f'in bugs. everything else works half and half. I think resellers need root or ssh access to get anything done otherwise, it usually requires admin intervention.

What i'm griping about right now, is the back up feature of Cpanel. I'm trying to restore a backup cpanel has made, and of course it's doesnt work. I'm guessing it's probably due to me not having sufficient privilages to go above the "homedir" directory to overwrite the files there

If you're a server admin and want an efficient, not bloated and secure CP then I highly recommend DirectAdmin.

Three web hosts which offer DirectAdmin are:
  • HostPC.com - $15.98/yr one of the best budget web hosts
  • DotSimple.com - Resellers account for $5/mo offers me 1GB/20GB with DirectAdmin. So far I've only had one bad experience where there was an outage for almost 2 days.
  • AT shared dedicated server - Resellers account offering 1.5GB/55GB for $5/mo through a great data center offer DirectAdmin.

DirectAdmin > cPanel on so many different levels.

Twista - Did you want your free web hosting account on cPanel with Fantastico (very popular) or DirectAdmin?

Currently you will be put on cPanel with Fantastico but I can change that to DA if you want?

cPanel has quite a number of security holes as well......it was to the point that every week there was a "SECURITY ISSUE, UPGRADE/PATCHES IN PROGESS". How annoying.

I get those e-mails from my web hosts every week, quite annoying.

Unfortunately cPanel has such a strong hold on the web hosting market that it's going to be a while before it's "de-throned".

H-Sphere, definitely. Beats the everlovin' crap outta CPanel (which we too used until a couple weeks ago.)

DirectAdmin pwns j00!! I was so sick and tired of Ensim on Dixie hosting but I never knew they were converting users over to DA. A quick check on the forums and a support ticket later and they put me on a new server. It rocks!

As an admin I like DA - it's lightweight, which means it's fast, and it works. I can't even think of any real showstopping bugs, there's a minor one where once in a blue moon someone's mailbox will be created with the wrong permissions, but out of around 30 DA servers hosting I'd say 2000 domains I've seen this maybe 6 times total, so it's a very isolated problem.

The price is unbeatable, if you buy a lifetime license it's a great value, Cpanel runs about $35 per month and I don't like monthly anything, let me pay once and use it, maybe charge me for support outside of bug fixes and security updates.

novon,

I received your PM and you are correct, my favorite web host HTTPme.COM only offers cPanel but no DA.

So I got a VPS (10x better than resellers account, way more powerful it's like a mini managed dedicated server)

$0 setup
$49/mo
No committment or obligation

10GB disk space
200GB per month bandwidth
DirectAdmin or cPanel

-Free upgrades to OS including security patches
-Free remote-hands, including debugging problems
-PHP, MySQL, CGI, stats, and more
-Port monitoring, instant hands-on response to issues
-No charge for reboots or system troubleshooting regardless of fault
-Immediate hardware replacement (at our cost) if components fail
-Unlimited port-monitoring, pro-active response to problems
-Full 24/7 tech support including: assistance with configuration, DNS management, apache/SSHD/OpenSSL/nameserver/etc configuration, and more

IP to trace 209.50.251.77

Speed test files are available here.

Here's the great thing about a VPS, you can create your own reseller accounts :p :p :p

For more info and an e-mail invitation, PM me your first/last name, email address and AIM/MSN.

From my experience from both DirectAdmin and Cpanel I will never go back to Cpanel if I don't have to. DA is so much more user friendly and has made reselling packages amazingly easy.

I just recently switched webhosts that use DA and it couldn't have been easier. Check out all the features at: http://www.site-helper.com The site explains every feature in detail.

Direct Admin is the way to go :)
