I will have an X2 4800+ tomorrow...retail-boxed

Thank you, Mwave. Tomorrow I will be installing my X2 4800+. I ordered it today and opted for Overnight delivery. After all, if I'm spending $1k on a CPU, of what concern of mine is shipping cost?! LoL

I just wanted to let you guys know that retail chips seem to be arriving, though not necessarily in the 4400+ variety. Mwave has the 4200+ and 4800+ retail boxed - IN STOCK - and shipping right now. No waiting.

Retail is nice for the warranty I guess, but I don't think the retail cooler will handle overclocking better than aftermarket heatpipes.

Congrats, and good luck.

<-- will have an OEM 4400+ in his hands tomorrow, but it won't stay there long because it will be quickly placed in "the receiver" aka my ASUS A8N-E 😛

I'm very curious to know what stock coolers AMD is shipping with these puppies. Is it akin to the ones provided with the FX series, heatpipes and all? I'll know tomorrow...

It comes with a nice HSF. Pipes and copper bottom.

That's what I'm being led to believe, but until I actually open the box and see it for myself I don't want to get too excited.
I wouldn't worry about not getting a good heatsink with your Retail 4800+. AMD supplies well-designed HSFs' with the PIB (Processor-In-A-Box) units. I'm quite sure that the 4800+'s HSF will feature heatpipes (remember the Retail shipped with such a HSF).

The only this is that the Retail HSFs', while doing an admirable job at default speed, typically aren't nearly as effective when overclocking. And even if you don't plan on overclocking, an XP-90 and a Panaflo L1BX will do just as good a job (if not better) than the Retail HSF but much more quietly.

Congratulations on your new 4800+! (jealously flipping you the bird in good fun). I want one!
