I went to look at a treo 650 at verizon yesterday

In my quest at getting a 650, I went to the store to look at the model.

The guy told me that other models have faster browsing.

I'm not sure - is EVDO the only used with sprint or T-mobile? Is this the same as verizon's wireless broadabnd? If so, I have seen two numbers on verizon's website - 400-700 kb/s and 60-80 kb/s. What does the slower one apply to?

I'm under contract with verizon, and I need something now (well, by 2 -3 weeks from now) that will have pda, phone, and email access. The mp3 player/web browsing is a nice plus for the bus/train.

Maybe they meant 400Kbps = ~50KBps and 700Kbps = ~87.5KBps ... they just put it in different ways - kilobits vs. kilobytes. I always use KBps since that's what downloads mostly display as.

Anyway, about EVDO, I've been trying to find the answer to the same question about the Treo 650. I know VZW supports EVDO now but I don't know if it's dependent on the phone model. I'd also like to know if it's a must to sign up for the unlimited data plans to get EVDO. I currently just use my minutes, but it is dial-up speed. I really don't want to pay $60/mo. for just my phone. I have 4 phones paying $80/mo. total after taxes right now.

I have a Treo 600 and love it for movies/mp3s. Check out TCPMP for playing movies and I REALLY recommend you buy PocketDVD Studio for converting dvds/other existing files like avi,wmv,etc. to a Palm-playable quality. You can do it for free using VirtualDubMod (link), but this app saves TONS of time and effort.

^ in that case, the NationalAccess option is barely faster than dial-up speeds... that's only about 10KBps AVG. As a matter of fact, that's probably what I'm on now... except I'm signed up under a family share plan and use my minutes (which I'm not sure they still allow on new signups).

BroadbandAccess is what you want for actual broadband (EVDO) - just find out which phones are enabled for it (find out for me too )

Unless something has changed in the last couple of months last I heard the 650 was not compliant with the new standard. I forget the name but I think it's the evdo you're talking about.
If they are however talking about browsing speed then they are somewhat right. Blazer is not the most impressive program. However if you pay the money for one of the other browsers for the palm you'll find a much improved browsing experience.

Edit: For mp3 playing. If you're doing so with headphones make sure you get the palm headphone adapter or compatible. Word is ones like the Radio shack one will damage the jack.

The treo 650 isn't EVDO compliant. Currently the audiovox one nad the samsung i730 are the only EVDO compliant phones available through Verizon. Spring has EDGE IIRC but it is not as fast and widespread as Verizon's EVDO
