I went to a hypnotist on Sunday

We went to see this guy, Rich Guzzi on Sunday night. He explained the "art" of hypnosis and then asked for five volunteers to come up on stage and have a seat. It was a small audience, maybe 30 people total. Nobody in our group of eight volunteered, so I went up. Three other men came up on stage. The hypnotist asked for a female volunteer and none of the ladies wanted to do it. Finally, an elderly lady came up.

So anyways, he had us stare at lights and focus on his words. Then he had us close our eyes, then open them again, etc. The whole time, I was trying very hard to "fall under". After about 10 minutes of the guy trying to hypnotize everyone, I still hadnt fallen under. I looked at the other people on stage and they were asleep. So, I guess the guy got frustrated, so he came over to me and put his hand on my head and tried to make me fall asleep.....it wasnt gonna happen. Finally, he whispered in my ear to leave the stage

He then did a mini hypnotizing thing to the audience and tried to find a victim. It turned out that a girl from our group fell under and ended up coming on stage.

He had them pretend to strip, he made them believe that they were cops and the audience were criminals, he had them act out a bodybuilding contest, and he had them do a chinese rap contest. It was funny, but I didnt think it was as funny as everyone else was laughing. Maybe I was turned off a bit after I wasnt able to fall under the hypnosis.

I still don't know if I believe it or not. Yes, I saw random people get hypnotized, including our friend, but why wasn't I able to get hypnotized? I guess some people are more susceptible to hypnosis than others.

The art of hypnosis is finding someone who is willing and wants to be hypnotized. There is no way to hypnotize someone who does not want to be.

In other words, weak-willed losers. I never have believed in it, but I've known others who swear they were hypnotized. They're the same people who think paying $140 for a pair of jeans is o.k.

Wouldn't that be Hyptonite?

Paying $140 for good quality jeans is quite okay in my books.. I don't see why you should be critical about the price.
Some may argue that it is dumb paying $500 for a piece of silicon :p

Did you recently cast Protection From Evil?

Notes: Creates a magical barrier that wards a target from attacks by evil creatures. It grants a bonus to armor and saves. Against evil creatures' attacks and spells this provides a +1 deflection armor class bonus and +1 divine bonus to saving throws. The saving throw is ok, but replicated by the presence of a paladin or a Bless spell. This spell (and spells of the same sort that protect from other alignments) makes the creature who benefits from this spell immune to charm and domination spells and abilities, command undead and similar. It does not affect spells that force a specific action, such as Ottos Resistible dance.

A guy did it at our school once with an audience of about 1500. 30 people went up on stage and about 4 had to leave, but the rest were very much hypnotized. I knew some of them personally and they would never have done most of what they did, so I definitely believe it has at least some effect on people. One girl was singing and dancing, yelling and screaming (doing what he told her to), and you have to understand that this girl talks to no one, looks at no one, won't sit with anyone at lunch, and won't even talk to you if you walk up and force a conversation. I think everyone was in shock at the transformation she went through on stage, and there is no way in hell it was an act.

i've been hypnotized and i've hypnotized others many times. it works, but both people have to be fully willing and not skeptical like the OP. it's the power of suggestion, and if you choose to not be suggestible, that's your choice.

i saw a hypnotist thurs night/fri morn during my grad night. it was pretty funny. i believe it somewhat, but its not like they're under complete control. they still can make choices and stuff; you can't tell them to do something immoral, like kill someone. its mainly just how open a person is to suggestion.

We had a hypnotist come in for our high school end of year celebration for senios. The guy told the audience that smarter people tend to fall under hypnosis more easily due to their ability to concentrate for longer periods. Of course, all the smart kids and wannabes perked up. The guy does his thing. I'm lookin at ZF, the smartest kid in our class (he goes to Harvard now). Did. Not. Get. Hypnotized. Take that hypnotist!

I didnt see it; but what did they say to explain why some people are more prone to it than others? Any scientific reasons or differences among personalities/character?
